Here's one of my favorite gold pieces, it's a 1986 Statue of Liberty gold coin. I wish I could take a close up of this coin because to me it looks flawless. On second thought, the sellers pics look pretty dog gone good!!

Here's another semi key that I posted on another thread last week. In addition to the interesting alloy streaks on the reverse, it also has a rare repunched mint mark (S-1).

Beautiful coins everyone! Here is my 31-s. It has decent luster and some irridescent highlights in places that I couldnt fully capture in the photos. What would you grade it?

 

I love the look of this coin and it is my favorite. The planchet toning. Rick Snow looked at this coin and said the discoloration is part of the planchet and gave it an Eagle Eye Photo Seal.

Sadly, I don't own any key date U.S. coins. Only a few of my Conder tokens would fall under the low mintage definition!

I kind of expected a few 16-D Mercs to pop up on this thread, regardless of condition.

As for key dates in U.S. type, I think Leadfoot is holding out on us.

And, Just Carl, anytime you want to donate one of those 10 55DDOs on a needy collector like me, please do so! I certainly don't have one.

How about a trio of semi-key 1909-S Lincoln cents???

My old MS64RD that had some pretty color:

I am not so sure that those 09-S's even qualify as semi-keys at those levels, but they sure got the eye appeal.

FWIW, the 09-S is the 32nd most expensive 65 red according to numismedia.

 

OH, I thought those were sort of standard, everyday, normal items.

 

The 1909-S Lincoln is definitely a semi-key coin. 4th lowest mintage in the entire 100+ year Lincoln series and it's not cheap in any grade.

Not quite sure about the numismedia values, but even so, the 30 coins or so that cost more than this one in 65 red do not make the 1909-S any less of a semi-key coin, it just means that many of those other coins are condition rarities at the 65RD grade as they weren't saved as much as the first year Lincolns. price those same 32 coins out at the G4 grade and the 1909-S Lincoln will likely be in the top 5 in value, that makes it a semi-key. I'm guessing most of the others more expensive that the 1909-S in 65RD will be worth under $5-$10 in G4 condition.

Same story for the 1908-S Indian Head cents. Many IHCs cost more than the 1908-S in MS65RD, but very few cost more in the very low grades. The low mintage and relatively high price across all grades make it a semi-key.

 

My point in raising that stat is the in my opinion and at least several others, the definition of "keys" is condition dependent. The single key for a top registry set is generally said to be the 1926-S. Although, 1919-, 1911-D, 1935-D (off the top of my head) and others have single top pops, but I have not seen them sell.

 

Although "condition dependent" is certainly one type of key RLM, I'd really like to see some of the lower minted, more traditional keys and semi-keys of any series in any grade you have them, as long as you personally find them appealing. I am a bit surprised that we haven't seen that many keys from different denominations here - like the 1916-D dime that was mentioned earlier.
