Hey ! I've been busy researching my penny coin folder and saw this 1914 and wondering if it makes the VF-40 grade that I'm hoping for . What do you think the grade would be ? Thank You in advance.
G-06 Details However, with better images, a second opinion would be warranted. Regardless, I don't see any way this coin would merit a grade of EF-40.
40 is an XF grade. From those images, I say it is not XF. And I'm not even convinced it is VF. I need larger and especially sharper images.
I'm thinking that it was the victim of an early cleaning. VG details I'm guessing. While you can see an inner ear and some curls, the obverse looks soft, as if it was cleaned. The reverse looks even softer; details not well defined like you would see on a heavily worn coin. But it doesn't look like circulation wear. Better photos would help though.
XF same as EF...he had it right. Just read in ANA that EF...Extremely Fine...is the more correct/official of the two, but like so many abbvs, X is casually used and accepted for certain longer words/terms.
I don't think @kanga was saying EF was wrong. He was using XF interchangeably to say the same thing @Bradley Trotter was saying, that 40 isn't a VF grade.
