Well, here is a coin I got for $2.92 back in March. Its 350-400BC Bronze from Maroneir, Thrace. You can still get lucky once in awhile. Traci
I've gotten some pretty good deals. Here are some of my favorites that were under $10. The first one is my favorite coin that I ever got in an uncleaned lot. It came exactly like this, and I thought it needed no cleaning at all: Constantius II Reigned AD 337 – 361 Coin Struck AD 337-341 AE 4 Follis Nicomedia mint RIC VIII Nicomedia 11 O: DN CONSTANTIVS PF AVG, rosette diademed bust right R: GLORIA EXERCITVS two soldiers standing to either side of one standard, SMNB in exergue The next two were in a set of low grade denarii and siliquae that I got on eBay for $15 total. I can post the rest from this group if anyone wants. Lucius Verus Reigned AD 161-169 Coin Struck AD 164-165 AR Denarius RIC 528 O: L VERVS AVG ARMENIACVS, laureate head right R: P V IMP II COS II, Mars standing right holding spear & leaning on sheild Vespasian AD 69-79 AR Denarius O: IMP CAESAR VESPASIANVS AVG, laureate bust right R: TRP…PON MAX, Vespasian seated right, holding scepter & branch The last one I remember costing either just under or just over $10, so it technically might not fit, but I'll share it anyway, as I really like it: Caracalla AD 211-217 Serdica AE 30 Hristova/Jekov No.12.18.34.18 O: AVT K M AVP CEV ANTΩNEINOC, laureate, draped, cuirassed bust right, seen from behind. R: OVΛΠIAC-CEPΔIKHC, Caracalla holding spear, sacrificing from patera over alter
Man you gods and goddesses are off on another planet someplace. And I mean that in a sincerely humbling way. How can you even look at a wheat cent, e.g., when you've got these in your collection? These are the things that made everything work and be built back then. And I find it incredible that they're so darn affordable! Here's my only acquaintanceship with these. I thought, excepting the fakes, they were all this pricey. Guess I'm going to have to take a dip into this pond one of these days, when I get some time...mainly just because, reading threads like this, I feel like I'm watching my life passing before my eyes...
Eddiespin and others interested: Did you know that there are people out there who collect catalogs like the Gemini sales even more than they collect the coins? Did you know that the Gemini sales are wonderful but still not the absolute finest coins out there? (You would not believe what has survived both in quqlity and quantity.) Did you know that there are hard bound sale catalogs, catalogs of coins belonging to famous people (President John Quincy Adams collection comes to mind - it was sold because the Historical society that owned it preferred the cash it would bring) and thousands of lesser quality printed lists dating to the period before the Internet ended much of the print media in favor of softcopy formats? Admittedly, today, it is getting harder to find lower end coins in printed lists. Finally, did you notice that even Gemini V shown above had coins estimated at $50. Certainly the bulk of the attention went to the $10,000+ stuff but it is all out there and you are most welcome to jump into either end of the ancient pond. Either way, buy from a reputable dealer (including the ones that sell on eBay).
