Ok, so this last weekend we celebrated my parent's anniversary with a trip to Lake Tahoe. My sister had a timeshare in Genoa, so we stayed there and just happened to be 5 miles from Carson City. With some mild persuasion, I convinced my parents and wife to take a trip to the old Carson City mint; that is now the Nevada State Museum. Very neat place above and beyond just the coin world....I'd recommend it to anyone near by. They take you through the entire mining/minting process, from raw ore and dirt, into a freshly minted coin. They also have a fascinating underground mine exhibit that really puts you into the miner's shoes and the environment they worked in....well minus the 130 degree temperatures and collapsing caves. Ok, anyways; back to the coins. They had a complete set of Carson City Coins! WOW! I was in awe, so I had to take some photos. They were behind steel bars.... I tried to reach in and touch, but my arms just weren't long enough.. fortunately, no alarms were set off. Ok, here they are in all there glory. And yes, the 1876 cc 20 cent piece was with them!
Here are a few more closeups where they decided they needed TWO of the same Carson City coins side by side in order to show both sides.....what a luxury to afford that kind of display. The last pic is my wife and I at the mine exhibit. She actually thought it was pretty cool! I'll keep trying, little by little, I might get her into coins someday!!! Ok, i'll stop kidding myself. She DOES have a cool collection of two dollar bills though.
Sweet! Thanks for taking pics and sharing with us. Bring one of those gripper things the elderly use next time. LOL
I was there recently and really liked the place. The narrow underground exhibit was impressive. You were so close but so far from those gold coins. Bruce
Thanks! Yeah, it was a great trip. They also have one of the neatest coin shops I've been to right across the street. By neat, I mean they have a huge selection and the dealers are very friendly. One of them was chatting with me and kept bringing out 5 figure coins just for conversation...lol
Wow!! I'm ready to pack my bags and put on my walking shoes and hit the road. That must have been awsome wow you're a lucky guy. I hope they all enjoyed it as well. Thanks for the photos. If I never get to go at least I saw them here on CT. Thanks Bob
