Been away for awhile but now i'm back with some questions. Hopefully this is the right forum. I've never used coin albums before but am thinking about getting one. Probably one for a type collection. I've been looking online at Danscos and Intercept Shields type albums and was wondering which one you guys thought was better. Or would I be better off just sticking the coins in capsules or 2x2s and keeping them in a box?
Both albums are excellent and make a great presentation for your coins. If you are planning on higher grade coins both albums have an optional archival slip case to help protect the coins. The popular type album for Dansco is the 7070
I like the Dansco 7070. I think down the road I'm going to go away from albums like this in general and place my coins in individual hard plastic holders...but if you want an album I would go with the 7070.
If you want the higher grades (hence more of an investment), think about coins in slabs. Then you would need something like a Eagle Certified Coin album. Basically you need to do a bit more up-front planning. Decide HOW you are going to collect you coins (raw vs. slabbed). How you store them can wait for that decision.
kanga most of my coins will continue to be raw. Alot of the coins I get are lower quality to keep them more affordable. Right now most of my coins are in 2x2s or tubes but I don't really have a types collection started yet.
What you might want to consider instead of an album is putting them in 2x2s or airtites and finding some kind of binder pages for them. One thing about type collections is they are very individualized. What you think should be in a type album and Dansco or IS think might differ. I like my Dansco 7070 just fine but there are a few varieties that I think it is missing...one example is with the Kennedy Half Dollars. I think there should be 4 in a type set (1964 90%, 1965-70 40% silver, 1971-Date clad, and Bicentennial) however the Dansco leaves out the 40% silver coins. With binder pages and 2x2s you can customize the type set to your own definition. However, if you like the Dansco and aren't as picky as me...then go with that. It's whatever makes you happy. To be honest, I really loved Dansco albums for years and only recently have decided I want to store my collection differently.
Excellent suggestion. Then you can tailor the type set to your liking. And if you change your mind later it will be easier to adjust. The NGC Registry Type Set (1793-1964) has something like 73 items and I think they're incomplete. And that's just the Cu / Ni / Ag set. Gold is another 20. I started with their "definition" and modified it using the Red Book.
Sounds like a good idea. One question. If i get the clear binder pages that hold 2X2s do I need to watch what brand i get to avoid PVC? And if so what would be same safe brands to get? Most of the ones I've seen don't seem to list if its in them or not.
Is there anything worthwhile on ebay anymore that's not Buy It Now? Lately it seems like the days of real auctions there are over.
Naturally this subject has been brought up also numerous times. The problem with a question like this is you find many differences of opinions due to each person has their own preferences. As for me, I like Albums. I use the Whitman Classic Albums for many reasons. one is the availability of the Albums, additional pages, additional slips, press on letters and numbers in Gold. The blue coloring is great for Copper coins but does not show off Silver ones as much. The brownish color of Dansco's make the Copper coins look less that what they are. Sort of blends in with theh pages. Intercept shields are to expensive for me and very difficult to find. I always suggest for normal coins to just put into an Album. Almost all albums today are basically the same, just different colors and a slight difference in sizes. I put all my Whitman Albums in gallon sized Zip Lock bags and they fit perfectly. Dansco's will fit too but some don't make it for some reason. I like the ability to make a Lincoln Cent Album from 1909 to present and all proofs and still have room for the future since I can add pages. Then too with the availability of blank pages I can and do make my own albums. So far well over 100 Whitman Albums and still more to come. However, to each his own.
The real auctions are out there if you are patient on ebay. In ONE auction I got about $450 (retail) worth of the really good Eagle brand holders (a bunch, BUNCH of them) and 5 full Eagle brand albums, full of holders in their pages, for $70. I was ecstatic when I won it. I had to watch and out bid others on it in the last hour so no one would get it. Only about a third of the supplies were used, the rest was new still in the original packages. And even the ones that were used were in very good condition. The seller sent me everything he had even many many replacement eagle holder windows, unused. He must have gotten out of collecting.
Well there was several months ago but I am banned from ebay until school ends. And all coins... If Im caught on ebay or looking at coins then my entire collection goes on ebay. Knowing my mom the start price is a cent with free shipping.
Don't know if you drive or have bike but you may want to check to see if there are any coin stores or coin shows in your area. No bidding, no postage, no insurance, etc.
Well I never seem to do what I say. Over the weekend I found a place that didn't have the pages to hold 2X2s but did have albums. So I came home with a Dansco 7070. It looks real nice and i think i got a good deal for it. only bad thing about it is it took me 2 hrs of pulling coins out of random places to stick in it. Looks like like i'll have to go buy more coins now.
That's fantastic, somehow I don't think you will be disappointed. I am enjoying the slow process of finding coins for my Dansco and the albums look great in a bookshelf.
