http://www.ecoinprices.com/Coin-Grading-Survey-Results.htm http://www.bestcoin.com/Rating-Coin-Grading-Services.htm This certainly goes ALONG with many of the comments I have read HEREIN. Thanks for each of your heads-up. Best wishes, History Student
I would put the list like this... NGC--PCGS--ANACS--ICG--PCI...and I would almost put ANACS before PCGS... If you will look you will see that none of the grading Co. got the "Outstanding" place in the PNG list... As it has been said...the PNG list or name on the back of a slab means next to nothing but I do like the servey they do... Speedy
I like to list TPG's relative to the market's response. Good, bad or otherwise, when the market speaks, premiums are paid for the services most respected in the numismatic community. Hence, I rank PCGS first followed by NGC...then ANACS is a distant 3rd followed by ICG. The rest of them I wouldn't touch unless I could see and hold the coin first hand. NGC is the Official Coin Grading Service of the PNG, so any surverys you see on behalf of the PNG are scewed (in my opinion) as there is a business relationship between PNG and NGC. How can you be independent when there is money and services rendered on behalf of NGC to the PNG? I can see it now. The PNG thanks NGC for their check before the surveys are tallied on grading services. Interesting don't you think? How about this survey that comes out weekly: Grey Sheet Weekly LINK But many would comment those numbers mean "zero". So what do we have left? Past performance and market prices...the true market indicator! After all, real money spent is REAL money. 1 + 1 = 2...there is no other answer. So I guess surverys are just that...surveys. Realized prices are in fact...REAL. Look at them, study them and then draw your own conclusions.
I believe this info is dated. I have seen this before, I believe over a year ago. ICG (not on my top 3 grading service) is right up there in the graysheets nowadays. I don`t know why Speedy likes ANACS so much, as he is not especially a Morgan Fan, but ANACS is THE Morgan variety grader, and...... .....and in my opinion, as far as Morgan Dollars go, I will stack up my ANACS Graded dollars vs any PCGS and NGC coin that I own. I believe ANACS undergrades a lot of Morgans. As a matter of fact My avatar is an ANACS 1880-S MS64. Pics can lie, but this one doesn`t. Tell me that coin isn`t a Dcam.
Thanks...I have... I like ANACS for a few reasons but one is that they don't try to get $20+ bucks just to tell you what your coin will grade... They grade problem coins and they don't send back BodyBags... They grade right...IMO...I have 1 coin from them that I think is a F12 (at the most) and they said F15... ANACS coins sell for less than PCGS or NGC coins...and that is great when buying...when I buy a key date that is graded by ANACS I can almost be sure that I'm getting a no problem, real, lower priced coin... ....so that is just a few reason why I like ANACS...I buy PCGS and NGC and PCI and IGC slabs too...in fact I just won a PCGS PF66 1958 Franklin.... But in my book...I collect what I like...and I buy what I like and I like ANACS...now don't get me wrong...I don't buy the holder...but if I'm buying sight-un-seen I feel A OK about a ANACS coin. Speedy
The Gray sheet is another price guide...that makes a guess at what coin prices will be...sure they use online auctions and many ways but NO ONE can tell anybody what the market will do one day from another day... So in my thoughts...even the Gray Sheet is just a piece of paper...if your willing to pay the price for the coin...they buy it...if its higher than Gray Sheet...too bad...if its lower...great... Speedy
I would say ProofLike for sure...I don't know if they would put DCAMEO since its not a proof....but IMO its a PL--- Speedy
If grey sheets are a just weekly piece of paper, then what would you call the PNG survey of 2002 and 2004? If you have truly looked at the numbers, how can you ignore this (from their webs site): "PNG and ICTA distributed 521 surveys to its full-time professional members on July 8, 2004, but did not send duplicate surveys to people who belong to both organizations. Respondents sent their completed surveys to the certified public accounting firm, BiggsKofford, of Colorado Springs, Colorado. A total of 172 qualified and verified surveys were tabulated by the CPA firm. The 2002 survey had 151 verified responses." So 172 people responded to the 2004 survey (keep in mind that NGC has a vested interest in the PNG) and people look at these numbers as gospel!?! Sorry...I look at REAL prices from thousands of REAL transactions. If I can buy, I try pick up ANACS or ICG coins at "dimes to dollars" pricing compared to NGC and PCGS. When I submit raw, I will spend the extra $5 or $10 dollars and submit to PCGS. Why? If I have to sell or liquidate, I will go with the service that is realizing the highest prices for my coins...far and above the cost of submission and all. Until the day when I see prices realize catch up and pass the likes of PCGS and NGC by other services, I still plan to buy low and sell high and apply the profits (I know that is dirty word to some) to other coins.
In 2002 - PCGS was the grading company paying the PNG for their endorsement. And they were every year before that. NGC did not win the bid for the PNG endorsement until March of 2004. And when they did - David Hall threw a fit because that meant PCGS wouldn't have it anymore. So was it any different when they looked at those numbers as gospel in 2002 ? Plain and simple - PCGS slabbed coins sell for more because they have a better marketing campaign - always did have. That's what put 'em on top to begin with.
The Gray sheet is what most small timers use for buy and sell, from what I know. It is not absolute. I have heard small timers offer to buy "Graysheet bid" less 10%. I am sure the big time guys with their nets, can buy this or that really cheaper. ANY particular coin can go for more or less. My avatar coin has a "book" value of between $40~$60. It is so pretty, I wouldn`t sell for twice that amount. Probably wouldn`t sell it at all because I like it. As has been said so often, BUY THE COIN, not the holder, But the jist of the whole deal, is, which grading service coins do YOU or I trust? I do buy coins sight unseen on ebay. I trust my ability to be able to tell honest pics, from "favorable" pics. I also trust to some degree, the grading service involved, when I buy certified coins, coupled with my knowledge of the various photgraphic tricks. I WILL NOT BUY NNC, NNT, ACG, or even PCI, sight unseen on ebay, for close to market prices, unless I can cherrypick a rare variety. Pretty Much, I do trust PCGS, NGC and ANACS, unless I really think it is an ugly, or obviously overgraded coin.
I don't go by what the PNG tells me or anyone for that matter...everyone collects what and how he likes...and the PNG is not going to tell me who I should trust and who I should buy from. So---now some CPA is going to tell us what to do...how do we know that the survey wasn't rigged? Speedy
One way to check out the survey is ... Go on Ebay and see if the so-called inferior graded slabs bring lessor prices than do the PCGS & NGC ones. In my humble experience, and in coins that I would be interested in, they do. But, that is for the individual collector/investor to figure out. Right ;>) I know it was last years info, however it is important to know what the public is being fed. That way you'll know where it is coming from when someone mentions it to you in the nuismatic circles. "What is truth?" Old question asked from Pilate to Napoleon, Now, if we just could have MS65 gold coins from those eras as a gift...
Your 1880-S is a beautiful coin My grading service preferance is NGC and PCGS for Morgan and Peace dollars. I wish NGC would attribute all the different Vam varieties, but they don't. PCGS is very good, but in my view colorphobic. I haven't tried anyone else. The dealer in my area (while very knowledgeable) really doesn't like collectors per se, but prefers a quick sale. I am a collector and I like to look at coins before I buy them. Having said that, I always purchase from him silver dollars, but I don't have the type of dealer that likes to work with people. I overheard say he didn't like time wasters. When I look at coins I like to look and take my time and I was offended even though the remark was not directed at me. Also, my local dealer doesn't have any enthusiam for Vam attributed varities. Accordingly, I now regularly purchse coins in Houston. Texas from US coins, Louisiana gold in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and I travel to Springfield, Missouri ( a three hour drive) to buy coins from Ozark Coins , and I would travel from Kansas to Florida to buy your beautiful 1880-S for a hunded an eighty dollars. I appreciate a beautiful silver dollar and yours certainly is. I also purchase the three coin modern commemoratives with the five dollar gold piece. I have over half those issued. I have bought them all from dealers in the last four months. I didn't mean to ramble, But there are so many dealers around the U.S. who see coins as a specialty and like to work with people and not treat coins as just a commodity. I wish many of you lived where I lived. I am afraid my dealer would not see the beauty of your coin and in my humble view, thats really sad.
I was addressing your comment made in post #2 when you stated: Call me crazy, but I would call that a contradiction. And by the way, when you stated you "did look at the numbers", what numbers and dollars were you looking at? Any TPG that wins bids or has a montery interest in surveys such as the PNG should exclude themself. These surveys like the grey sheets are just that, surveys and the only survey that holds water is what the market pays for one service over the other...REAL money paid for REAL services.
The part of the servey I like is where they tell who seems to overgrade..who can tell if a coin is cleaned and such...if you will look in my post I don't have my list of grading co. near what PNG does...I list ANACS and PCI more than PNG. I should have made it plain on what I liked about the servey...sorry about that I have looked at every link you have posted on this topic...I have also looked up many things myself...I'm sorry Midas...but we will have to agree to disagree... I have decided on what grading co's I like and you have decided who you like...that is what is great about this hobby...we can all collect what and how we like! Speedy
Agree to disagree?? That's no fun. Oh well, as they say on FOX, we'll let the audience (or in this case the market) descide.
this thread makes me happy that I only purchase raw coins. I'll let you guys argue over whos coin coffins are better. HA!
grading I have some gold coins that are going to need graded if I decide to sell them,( the coin shops I have taken them to tell me what they will grade then I looked in their cases at similiar slabbed coins graded much higher in the same condition?). Two things scare me....Will I get my coin back or someone else's, and the biggest thing is will the grade mine the same as someone that sends in a big lot of coins at the same time. I watch the coin-shop at home shows for a laugh from time to time, and it seems to me they have a very large quantity of PCGS and NGC coins that are graded extreamly high, (69 and 70). Also even the 63 or 64 graded coins look overgraded,( a lot of bag marks ect.). Just wondered if any body had any thoughts on the matter. Thanks for any help.
