My grandfather gave me a big bag of coins for my B-Day and this is by far my favorite one.. I'm guessing the condition is anywhere from ef30-40. I'm not really good at grading older coins. I'm just wondering what this coin could be worth...too bad there's a hole through the date...thanks for everyone that helps me out. Pennyman
so deduct for the um "damage" and you have a $8.00 coin perhaps. Holed coins, unless they are extremely scarce, rarely bring anything close to the otherwise grade price. Nice keepsake though! The hole in the coin, at one point was quite common practice.
I would say VF30 details - for the hole and the rim nicks. Certainly worth more than $8 dollars, but probably not to a dealer. I would expect some place between $30 and $50 on ebay. I can't see it good enough to attribute it.
Here 's a 1836 Bust half with overlapping edge motto or design (WE) lll-0l overlapping edge letters or design are defined as : A platchet which was rolled or turned to receive impressions between a pair of edge dies that were out of adjustment or had slippage in the drive . This 1836 reads if the pictures are not big enough "Fiffty cents Haor lfa do llar" very cool error bust half.
Back in the early to late 1800's, holes were drilled into the coins for a coin necklace. They did that alot back then. Don't now why. I'm guessing from $40-70 Dollars, but to me its worth more than that.
You'd be suprised by the amount of people that collect holed coins , I don't know the mans name but he wears a hat and vest with every type of holed coin hanging fom them , gold silver all periods of US coins very kool looking at a coin show . rzage
True. However you won't be finding many of them that will pay you $40.00 for it either unless, it is an extremely Scarce Date.
Luckily there are folks that collect holed coins. Granted that does not help the value but you might find it a good home if you were looking to sell someday.
I hate holed coins! But I think I'll just pass it along to my daughter in a couple years or so. She not even 2 and likes to help me go through coins! Start them early I say.
Sounds like a smart girl , collecting coins at age two , she must be daddy's little girl .:hail: rzage:smile
