Good eye @DonnaML. It really doesn't seem to have been noticed, not even by my favorite Adm. Smyth or by Alberto Banti, but there are other examples. This for instance is from Gorny & Mosch 191, Oct. 2011, lot 1948: Phil Davis
I had the same thing happen to me with a dealer who posts here on CT. About six months later saw that it happened to someone else here on CT by the same dealer. I have never said anything about my experience or who it was but I wonder if it happened to me and another CT member by the same dealer as how to many times this has happened with that dealer.
Here's an example, from a 2015 NAC auction, of a coin on which you probably wouldn't notice or identify what's protruding from the back of the quadriga as a wolf's head unless you knew what you were looking for. (It's the variety with Juno on the obverse). It seems clear that whoever designed the Trajan restoration issue of Rubrius Dossenus didn't notice a wolf's head on whatever coin was being used as a model:
@curtislclay and @Volodya, here are three more examples, found on acsearch, of coins I would characterize as showing "something" protruding from the back that I would only notice as a wolf's head if I were looking for one. However, if I do look closely, I don't think there's too much doubt that that's what was intended -- particularly on the second and third coins. PS: @Volodya, please pardon my ignorance, but who is Adm. Smyth?
Rear-Admiral William Henry Smyth, editor of the 1856 catalogue of the Family Coins collection of the Duke of Northumberland. The catalogue is sui generis, an astonishing combination of chatty bantering and erudition.
Thanks. I assume it's been reprinted? Edited to add: I see it's available online: https://archive.org/details/cataloguefamily00smytuoft . I will take a look.
Yes, both hardcover and soft. The original is more fun though, in a steam-punk sort of way, and probably not super-expensive with patience.
At the risk of taking the thread down a path not intended by the original post, I'll add my Dossenus. Although I can also see the wolf's head, I'm not sure that this is not a rendering of a rear bench with cushion or side rail and some sort of bar across the back. here's the full coin, I particularly like your coin @DonnaML for the full victory which seems to always fall off the top of flan. I also find myself wavering on whether I see a bunny or a wolf in this picture.
OP, this is a shitty situation and I'm sorry it happened to you. At the same time I bet you would be even more upset if the seller decided to look through his/her coins and find an 'equivalent' coin that to you probably wouldn't have met your expectations. So at least seller is honest in that regard, and didn't just send 'something' in order to keep the money.
Who you callin’ foo-foo! That is obviously the Rabbit of Caerbannog. Sorry about the disappointment @Cachecoins . About a month ago I had the same experience with a coin I tried to buy at retail where the dealer informed me that the coin had sold a long time ago and he was shocked he hadn’t taken it down and that I was the first person to inquire about it in the time since it had sold. He then took it down immediately. It is disappointing but the dealer is a trusted source and we all make errors. I consoled myself by setting that money aside for the next target that will inevitably catch my eye. I’m sure you will find your consolation coin. If I see a similar example I’ll be sure to let you know.
I recently had a similar experience with a seller on Vcoins. The coin was listed as available last month, so I paid for it. After a few weeks of no response I inquired with the seller about shipping status. A day or two later I got a response that the coin was sold in 2019 and apparently the listing was never removed. I was also told that another collector recently ordered the same coin. I did get a prompt refund. Sometimes, when ordering coins, a situation similar to a Keystone Kops scene results, and while there is some disappointment and frustration, I always try to take a wider perspective that there are many other opportunities out there ready to drain my wallet. I try not to dwell on the past - I have found that to be a trap.
Sorry to hear that happened, @Cachecoins ! Here's my example: L. Saufeius denarius by jb_depew posted Mar 15, 2021 at 11:29 PM
