Are you one of those who looks for coins in the usual places (couch, public telephone and vending machine change returns, beaches, etc.)? You are not the only one. Let me tell you about a job where the employees are paid to ferret out loose change:

Virgin Atlantic Airways' cleaning crews find an average of 18 cents per passenger per flight in loose change lodged in the plane's seats. If that figure holds true for the approximate 320 million people who fly globally into and out of the United States each year, the total surpasses $57 million. Domestic flights don't match that level, however, plane cleaning crews at Chicago O'Hare claim they find about six cents per flight.

Why are more coins found on worldwide flights? It is believed that more travelers returning to other countries, "accidentally on purpose," leave foreign coins behind to avoid dealing with them once they get home.

    Hope this was interesting...:secret:

I check the reject bin on the Coinstars all the time, I have found silver dimes, wheat cents, Bolivian 50 centavos, Swiss 1/2 francs, British coins, the best find recently was a 1934 wheat.

Time to 'fess up - yes, I am one of those. When I fly back to Europe, I usually keep my foreign cash as long as I could theoretically spend it. Who knows what last minute purchases I make ...

In general however, I do not leave it on board but somewhere at the arrival airport. If there is a donation box for some charity, fine; if not, it will end up somewhere - once I have made sure there are no "keepers". :)

I usually keep the Euro coins, especially the higher denomination ones, they come in handy in airport vending machines. I do like to look in the charity boxes to see what is interesting in there, obsolete money etc like Pesetas occasionally. I think right now though I have no Euros leftover, just a pile of Hryvnia notes that I will take back to spend soon - again they come in handy in Kyiv.

BTW on the subject of finding coins in airports, I found the most in one stay at the airport in Kyiv, 8 coins, 5 Ukrainian, 1 Russian, 1 British, and 1 American, when I was there to meet someone coming in from Paris. The British coin was a Penny, the American a 1964 cent, and the Russian a 2009 50 Kopek.

I find more coins on the ground in Ukraine than anywhere else, people discard the low value coins, there are three, a 1 kopek, 2 kopek, and 5 kopek that are all worth much less than a US cent - people must like like them because I found them all the time. I did find 10, 25 and 50 Kopek coins but not nearly as frequently.

I pick up every coin I see on the ground. Usually pennies but occasionally others, and keep them in a separate container. Alot of the pennies are parking lot finds, been driven over a few hundred times , making them barely recognizable. Currently I have about 8 inches filled in the bottom of an old glass 5 Gallon water bottle with 'found' coins. This of course is after 20+ years of saving them.

Very interesting. If I ever get to go somewhere again, I'll be bothering the travelers to see if they could please move so I can check their seat cushins. :)

Probably because international flights are longer and people tend to get up and down more often, stretching their legs, going to the restroom etc. This up and down increases the likelihood of coins dropping out of pockets.

Good to see you're still with us and thanks for reading and the point you make is why lots of those owning metal detectors check parking lots and drive-in theater parking spaces (up and down/in and out)...

Thanks Clinker, I check the ground, at the stores. where ever I go.
Find a penny pick it up, all day long you'll have good luck. But this can apply to any coin. You are a little richer.

I caught my mind runnignwild recently. I was taking a walk out in the woods and came across 3 early year cars currently rusted out and supporting trees. Unknown how they got there or when but I instantly thought...look for coins. I tore apart the seats "what the rats hadn't gotten to already" looked through the rusted floorboard. My hopes where high but all I got was stung 5 times by wasp. Oh well, it had potential.
