The first time that all the tables have been sold. I would say based on what I seen there was above average numbers in attendance. What prompted me to talk about this was some of hte coins that I saw at this little local show.

Generally I just go to chat with some of the dealers that I know because I know their stock about as good as they do. Same stuff month after month with a few goodies added here and there.

Alot of dealers jumping on the Lincoln Cent bandwagon. Most tell me that it was a good show and people were there SELLING. I finally got to see some fresh Bust Halves, a Decent selection of Large Cents and some Average Circ Barbers. But thats not the Grand Prize. I got to hold in my hand, probably the best assembled set of PROOF V nickels in the world. The guy that owned finished it in about 1960. I watched it change hands from the collector to the dealer. I was offered the set but can not let loose of that kind of change right now. Each coin in this set was meant to be next to the coin it was with. Alot of the coins were rainbow toned on the reverse. I dare say that the proofs were in the Pr66 range and most were in the 67 range a few may hit 68. What a set. I have never seen anything like this and sure I never will again. It was in a black capital holder and after me talking to the dealer should be heading to PCGS for a custom made complete set holder all authenticated and graded. I think this will pull in the 6 figures when it goes up at Heritage as a complete set, Its THAT nice.

Thanks for sharing. I, for one, didn't realize such a high grade V-nickel set existed. I kinda knew the individual coins existed, but it never dawned on me that a complete set of proofs grading Pf65 and better had been assembled by one person...

Opens up a great number of probable high-grade collrvtions...

Just to get a feeling of the show's size, about how many dealers were there?

    It was offered to you?

    Dare I ask the price?

I too wonder what that would be worth.
What I think is not so good though is that for a type of coin where the mintages are so low in Proof states, the prices are just not up there. At times it almost appears that Nickels are just not a biggy for collectors.

    I agree.
On the average nickels appear to be the Rodney Dangerfield of coins.
Except the Buffalo nickels do quite well.

I haven't been to a show around here all summer. Which show was it?

Kanga, The show was about 30 dealers

Frank, Yes it was offered to me. I would rather not put the price out here because I am sure once this set hits mainstream its going to gather alot of attention.

Borg, it was the one on Inkster Rd. & I96. Chucks show

Sounds nice I'll watch for it someday. Of course just to see it and what it goes for, I don't have that kind of change either.

I didn't even know there was a show last weekend. But then again, I haven't been to any of the little local shows in quite a while. New half cents just don't show up around here, and that's about all I'm really interested in right now. Plus, my son isn't quite ready for a trip to a coin show - he's gotten to the grabby age.

The show being discussed here is the Redford VFW show. It is held the last Sunday of every month, and is located in the VFW hall (surprise!) on Schoolcraft Road (the I-96 service drive) just east of Inkster Road.

For a list of local shows, I use a dealer website: www.workingmancoins.com

He only has the shows listed where he sets up, but in the non-summer months, it's a pretty comprehensive list.

Jim: Thanks for the information. I know Chuck; he's a great guy. I don't think I've ever seen a sold-out show at that site, so I'm glad to hear it's going well. Now that August has run its course, I'll be right back in the swing of things.

Fish: I'll see you at a club meeting real soon! Can't wait to hear about your summer excursions.

    Jim,

Thanks for the info on that show. I never knew about it. It's close to the MSNS show, but I'll try to make it out there.

There are numerous listings for coin shows all over the place. For example you could just go to Google and type in Coin Shows in Michigan. Some coin forums also list coin shows such as www.coppercoins.com Although most of the dealer type web sites only list coin shows they attend such as jmscoins.
Not sure since I haven't looked lately but Coin World Magazine web site used to list coin shows. Another idea is try coin clubs in Michigan on Google or Yahoo. Then contact them for smaller local shows that are not shown on the above larger listings.
An alternative is to move to Illinois. We have over 4 shows a Month around me. And that is just for coins. We also have gun shows, knife shows, computer shows, camera shows and on and on and on.

B, I'll be presenting at the meeting next week. Actually, I'll probably be presenting at both meetings this month. Yes, they'll be somewhat half-centric, but I hope they'll be interesting, and I guarantee discussion will be had - assuming Tom sends out the blurb I sent him, which tells people 1. that they need to bring things to participate and 2. what exactly they need.

Sweet. I'm looking forward to your presentations. I haven't received any e-mail yet...

Tom sent one out, did you get it? If not, the short version is that you should bring (if you want to participate) any half or large cents, a good glass, and any grading references you frequently use. Also good would be pre-1830 silver, it seems to work okay for this exercise. We'll be practicing net-grading, and I have PRIZES to give out. Prizes! Good ones!

I'm hoping to do another presentation the meeting after this one as well (got a subject and everything, it just depends on if I get material ready), and I'm thinking about doing one the meeting after that too.

Turns out I like listening to myself talk. Who'd've thought?
