Huh. How 'bout that. Impaired Proofs are like house pets that escaped into the wild. Fun finds. Interesting roll, for sure!

Is it a Proof or S mint business strike?

Learned here a couple weeks back that since 2012, San Fran has been producing low mintages of S mint Business Strike coins for circulation. I've found impaired proofs in my change, but these appear to be business strikes (no cameo).

    My eyes have been opened...

Hm. I forgot about that. Oh well. Still, finding S-mints in modern pocket change is interesting enough.

Low mintages, you say? All the better.

@furryfrog02 I believe Furry said it was around 2 Million a year. It kind of feels like the limited West Point releases, only it didn't carry the same fanfare.

The one's I have found are in the range of 1.2mil to 800K.

The business strike San Frans seem to range more like @Mark68 said. I don’t think any of them are over 2 mil.

Edit: They don’t get much fanfare because you can only get them from the mint. Not released into circulation like the West Points.

Wow, 800K mintage is crazy low for a modern business strike coin!

That would make sense. Kind of like impaired proofs then...meant for collectors but found a pathway to circulation.

Reminds me a little of what happened at the P-mint during 1956-1964 with the Wash qtr bus strikes on older/worn proof dies...the type-2 reverse, etc. Not exactly the same but in the ballpark.

I guess weigh them to make sure they are not silver.

I get a roll of S minted quarters every time a new quarter is issued. These are all business strikes. I have at least a roll per issue. This last on, the Tuskegee Airman, I picked up a 100 count bag. I received a bag of the 2015S Saratoga quarters and found 18 that had a partial doubled profile (MD as per John Wexler). Cool looking nonetheless, but John is correct. Push Doubling (error-ref.com)
