Who can be the first one to answer these 2 questions. 1. name the 4 things to look for (characteristics) when buying a 3 legged buffalo. 2. when did the 3 1/2 legged occur? Sorry no prizes, just bragging rites.
I will give you one since it really isn't a characteristic. Watch out for file or buffing marks. So there are really 3 characteristics
For Number One, I can only think of two that might be things to look for. One would be scratches to the left and right of where the leg should be to see if it was scraped/brushed off. The second would be to look for the other legs to be worn down to nearly nothing. This would prove that the front leg was worn off instead of the valuable error. The other two (if my guesses were right), anyone?
The moth eaten effects on the rev. along the rear leg. I can't think of another way of describing it but its a rough area along the rear leg. 1937 D Buffalo nickel by a mint worker who was trying to get a inperfection out of the die.
A mint worker used an emery board to remove a defect or clash mark on the reverse die. The coin in MS has a satiny or slightly grainy luster.
2) there is also a "moth eaten" area on the back of the Indian's neck. 3) there is more space between the motto and the buff's back than on other issues. 4) there is a line of raised die marks between the animal's abdomen and terra firma, thus the appellation "pi**ing buffalo." that's all I can come up with.
Here are the things to look for in a 3 legger: 1) The beard on the right side is longer than the beard on the left side. 2) The rear leg is very weak and appears almost damaged. 3) There should be no file or polish marks in the area where the leg is missing. 4) The words "Pluribus and Unum" are seperated from the back of the Buffalo.
There was also die problems on the obverse. There is a roughness at the back of the neck near the hair. The second feather floats, the connection was ground off There is roughness on the throat and a small hairline crack in MOST of the 3-L. There is a roughness at the hairline on the forehead. Jim

I was offered a beautiful 3-leg nickel many years ago. I didn't buy it because at that time I hadn't learned to authenticate the beast.
Who says that of course I don't mind it.. I just am trying to understand if this thread was made in jest or did you really like my Buffalo nickel?
I love your nickel. Wish I had one of my own. Thought it would be a good starting point to learn more about it.
