I'm just wondering if I or anyone else should pay 10x face value for what is now going to be a key date you guys think they will go up in value? or is this all hype and they will just drop in value in a year or so? I remember people saying the 2004 peace medal p or d rolls were going to high rocket it price from the $16/roll for p and $10/roll for d to $20-$40 a roll depending on the mint now they are selling for less then what they were in 2005...
If I were giving someone advice I would honestly say dont hold your breath on the 2009 Dimes or Nickels being worth more than face in the long run. The mint has still produced 10's of millions of each... just that they havent made their way into circulation yet, but they will eventually. Perhaps the mint uncirculated sets might be a nice pick up this year, who knows?
I agree that the mint uncirculated sets are a good way to go (I'm on subscription for 20). Here's an interesting scenario... There's been talk since 1996 of either eliminating the penny and nickel or changing their composition to steel. http://www.gao.gov/archive/1996/gg96153t.pdf http://ohmygov.com/blogs/general_ne...s-mint-still-losing-hundreds-of-millions.aspx The CoinStar machines in many banks and supermarkets has reduced the need to supply banks with fresh coinage. It's my understanding that this is the primary reason so few nickels and dimes have been minted in 2009. So here's an unlikely (but very slightly possible) scenario... Congress decides to halt production of the penny and possibly the nickel. The reserves they have on hand (to include the 2009 issues) are melted. Billions more are destroyed as the public turns them in. All of a sudden, the 2009-d nickel is more rare than the 1916-d Mercury dime. ...wouldn't that be cool? Also... Here's an interesting link...check out the "2008 Tax Free Gold Act"... http://www.coinnews.net/2008/04/30/2008-congressional-coin-bills-by-name-and-number-4060/
Coming from a guy who has sold a boatload of 2009 p dimes, I don't think they will be all that rare. I just think it has taken a long time to put them into circulation. Who knows where all the 09 D dimes and nickels are because not one has surfaced yet! Weird. Of course, I could be wrong, but I think they will slide back down close to face value in a few months.....
