Nickel Error

    If it is recessed (and that appears to be the case), then it's a strike-through error. A piece of debris was interposed between the obverse die and the planchet. This is a very unusual find in a proof.

    Howdy Ruth - Welcome to the Forum !!

    These are known as strike throughs. I piece of material - metal, plastic, dirt, grease - almost anything - falls into the coining chamber when the coin is struck and creates these marks.

    Yes they are what is on the coin for half of the year in 2005...it has a Buff on it...starting any time now you will see a new one with a Ocean View on the back.
