Superb toning, powerful luster, and gem surfaces. What is not to like. Great pick up Goldstone. I love it!
Thanks!! I'm glad you approve! I got 3 others today too...one is also raw posted in another thread, one is NGC kind of cool purple color(ALSO HAS A CUD/Strike through not sure), I'll post it later and the other nothing special...just solid strike with tons of luster
Very nice love the coins and the color. Nice grab I've got a 1954 S and a couple 1956 the other day but they don't have that nice color. Bob
What is the Best Way to get this coin graded though? Already have $35.00 into it (dealer thinks its a 65) According to PCGS theres economy for coins worth under $300.00 that would be $18.00 certification...is it even worth it?
It is not worth it unless you are certain it will grade at MS66+ or get a star. From those photos I am not certain of either. Since you have the coin in hand, you would be a better judge.
When I compare to some of my 65's I see a definite plus, so I do believe it is higher...I didn't really consider sending to NGC, but maybe I should...how can I tell if it'l get a star what are some specific things to look for to debate whether or not to send it in?
I gave up trying to figure out how NGC awards the star designation. The only thing I can say is that is similar to weak strike in a way. If the issue typically does not show great eye appeal, they will be more likely to award the star. If the issue is commonly rainbow toned, they are very particular. I also believe they have become much more strict with the star designation over the last few years.
Hm...IMO on this coin, or any toned coin...I'd be better off with a PCGS slab, than an NGC with no star...but I really don't know if it will get the MS66 With PCGS (to make me happy) I wouldn't be suprised if it got MS65, and I'd be disappointed with MS64 (but I don't think that would happen). Which company do you think I would be better off with using? I know I would like to get these graded...
I probably wouldn't have this coin slabbed. I agree with Lehigh that it's not worth it unless it gets a star or is a very high MS grade. If it were mine, I would buy a intercept shield holder and put this coin in it. That will help prevent the toning from proceeding any farther and thus preserve the beautiful rainbow colors. Here is what I'm talking about if you aren't familiar. They are probably the best holders on the market right now. http://www.tradewindssupplies.com/i...eld-2x2-holders-24-3mm-intshch24-3-detail.htm
The TPG's seem to err on the side of caution these days when it comes to color. It might end up being a waste of $18 + shipping both way's. I like the idea of using albums with the protective sleeve that works similar to the intercept shield technology. That way it's easier to look at it in context of a collection.
Thanks for the help guys, I'll hold off for a special or a spike in the demand for the older washingtons/toned! and I'll get one of those holders...the toning wont fade right?
There is always risk that the toning gets darker and less colorful but I don't think it will fade. The Intercept Shield holders will assist in making sure the coin stays as is but you still need to supply proper storage conditions to further guarantee this.
To preserve the coins state and coloring....with coloring like this a 2x2 (cardboard) isn't the best.
A slab is far from air tight and coins can further tone in the slab without proper storage. Intercept shield makes a protective storage box for individual slabs too.
From what I have read, the intercept shield holders are the best for preserving toning. They are specially designed to absorb chemicals from the air that cause the coin to tone to prevent toning. This has the affect of keeping blast white coins that way and keeping toned coins as they are. If you leave the coin in the 2x2, I'd be afraid that overtime the toning might continue and will turn black. Even in the intercept shield holder, the coin needs to be properly stored though.
Great pick up Goldstone! You got to ask yourself why you want it graded? Do you want to collect all the Washington's graded or just random nicely toned graded coins like Lehigh? I have most of the Washingtons's and bought IS 2x2's for all of them (a lot of $) plus an archival clam shell binder. The thing is a huge monstronsity and I don't look at it much. I want to put them back in the Dansco and let em tone- go figure. I ask this because this series from 32-98 has a LOT of coins (like 270 or something). Anyway, it's a great coin
Ha, more like all random coins! My collection is probs one of the most random collections....I'm starting to fill it with some nicer coins..but If I like a coin I'll try to get it. Also I'm still yet to sell a coin hahah
