http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=1129&Lot_No=839 I was running through the Walkers offered by Heritage in the upcoming Long Beach show and saw this one. No, I am not looking to buy it but wondered what some of the toning savants around here think of the "steel toning". Rather interesting although I don't know that I like it.
I don't mind the toning as such, but what would worry me is that above the head and around the right hand on the obverse and above the letters of UNITED on the reverse is toning that is dark dark grey/black and I would call it corrosion in those areas myself. Since toning can continue in a slab, I would not want to buy it at normal prices. Jim
Simply put - nope. I don't like the heavy dark toning since it tends to hide the luster. Just my opinion.
Its dark for me, but at least it is original tone. I'm in the same situation. Who likes the tone on this peace dollar, for the most part my set is white. http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=1129&Lot_No=8915
If that was a VF coin I would like the toning a lot better. It almost looks like someone burried an MS coin to get it that dark. A long story short, no I do not really like that toning. You should make this a poll to get more answers.
Eye appeal being a large part of price, I feel that this will likely come up with a disappointing hammer price. In other words, I find it ugly.
Now that we have Lehigh's thoughts, I would say not too many big fans of "steel toning". My original reaction was not favorable either although I would be curious to see it in hand. It will be interesting to see the sale price, assuming it sells.
This coin has a problem that is all too common with key date coins. Often times, the key dates that hit the market are unattractive. I don't find MS63 walkers to be very attractive at all regardless of date. IMO, walkers become beautiful in gem. But with a population of 14 and a $100K price tag, good luck with the 1919-D. To illustrate my point about key date coins, I don't think I have ever seen an attractive 1893-S Morgan Dollar.
I'm in the minority here, actually I think I AM the minority here, but I happen to like this coin. I like the way the tarnish spares the central designs, for the most part, and practically shouts "original!" So many of the MS early Walkers that I have seen look dipped or fussed with-- I am sure there are other original ones, of course-- that to see one like this is to me a breath of fresh air.
I love a nicely toned coin, but I'm a bit more picky with my toning specifications than the example you used. There was a really nice rainbow toned franklin half on ebay around 3 days ago, it went for $36.00. I had to stop bidding but I wish I would have been able to get it as it was a beauty. Here's a Mexican Caballito coin 1910 that I was bidding on and someone swept it from under my nose, it's one I really like. Here's another example of a toned coin but this one I don't like too much. It's a 1921 dos pesos silver from Mexico as well. Sometimes I get good ones and sometimes I don't. Oh by the way, does anyone know what happened to the bottom coin? I think maybe it was in cloth, like wrapped in a towel or something. Anyone?
