Been trying to find a decent list of the harder FS jeffersons for awhile, I know that pre 80 is hard but looking for specific dates. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
Such a thing probably doesn't exist. Jefferson nickels just don't get the interest that other issues (Lincolns, IHC's, etc.) get. They are not silver (okay, the war nicks are) but they are 5x the face of cents. I'm guessing no serious study has been made of them. Some young person could probably make some money by doing a study for 10 years and then publishing a book. I'm not sure I have 10 years left.
One good reference is... Another is... Some issues were released having been struck from dies that did not have "full step" details. I don't know what your definition of "full steps" is, but to me, it means six unbroken steps, as they appear on the original design. I'm afraid that you may have great difficulty finding anything close to that, with certain date/mintmark issues. Let me know if you find a "Full Step" 1969-D.
I haven't seen the analyst book, what all is in it? I have seen the others but they didn't have alot of specofoc FS info from what I remember. There actually is a full step jefferson club, stuff is hard to find from them though, and it looks like their website has been taken over by an internet referrer. their concensus was that 6 steps are not needed to be FS. Even Many proofs will never have the seperation for step 1. NGC and PCGS don't require 6 steps to be FS designated. NGC even has 5 step 5.5 and 6 step designations. I know someone probably has information on the hardest FS jeffersons to get, other than the general 60's etc. Because when you see some FS's at auction certain dates bring much more.
My fault, that was ANACS I was thinking of, here you go. http://www.teletrade.com/coins/lot.asp?auction=2658&lot=1316
Sure, tell me the lowest populations of every MS-65 jefferson for the whole series! Hee hee, actually I wouldn't make anyone do all that, but if you saw a trend like 70's P mints or 60's D mints it would get me started. Maybe we can work together to come up with something on a rarity scale like 1-5 or something like that?
Too much to go into now. I can tell you, though, that Mr. Nagengast includes his opinions on the rarity of each issue's "full Step" availability. Yes, there was a group of dealers who promoted this certain design feature. I suppose that due to the lack of interest, they decided to abandon the idea. A few of the TPG's will still lable a slab with a requested "designation", provided the customer pays extra for it.
I have the listings that used to be on Varietynickels.com, but I would say that they are pretty out dated. I think maybe the last time Jason updated the list was maybe in 2002. Speedy
...ok, back to what he is asking. My contribution is early 1950's "s" mint. Now does anyone have any specific contribution to the list?
its hardly scientific but I took my set which is a pretty nice set and looked at all of them, none of mine from the 60's are FS. 1 from the 50's, 6 from the 40's, 3 70's, 7 80's, 15 90's. Of course excluding proofs. I think this is probably fairly representative. I know in I think 1980 they strengthened the dies so pre 80's would have to be the harder ones.
Absolutely. I would suggest reading Bernard A. Nagengast's book. It should provide all the insight the OP is looking for.
Just ordered it and the redbook nickels book you recommended, had to get my new cherrypickers guide anyway so did it all at one time! Thanks again for the input.
Got my nagengast book yesterday! It is exactly what I have been looking for, actually for years on and off, I can't believe I never ran into it before! Thanks again for the tip, my other books are back ordered at amazon.
