sorry about the horrible pics, 11:40 after track meet, and i'm about to go to bed, the 500 and 5,000 won were new editions i just took another 100 piece, i have everything in current SK currency except for the 1 and 5 won and the 10,000 bill, the 10k is only worth $6, i don't know why my dad did not get one for me, o well, hopefully he goes back and definitely comes back safe so i can finish out my collection, my brother got a really sweet display thing that had various year coins of all the coins of South Korea, the coins all are in good condition probably slightly Near mint or slightly below that with also a stamp with it, it is a coin and stamp of Korea display, i guess they only have one stamp, very interesting, the 5,000 has no major creases but it is slightly curves upward, i will put it under some of my dad's law books to flatten it out, if i should not do that please tell me, but if i do do it a crease should not form

That's pretty cool there. I remember my time in SK and you couldn't find a 1 or 5 won piece anywhere except maybe a coin shop and I didn't speak enough korean to get directions to one.

Nice of your dad to bring you back some items!! Even better you have almost a complete set (if you have doubles, PM me)

As for flattening the note, iw ouldnt do it. Sure it might get rid of the 'curves' but it could also rid the note of any pesky embossing. Original embossing is not something you want to be rid of!!!

I was stationed there in 2000 and I don't recall seeing anything smaller than a 10 won coin in circulation (and even then pretty rarely... found a few 50 won coins, but it was pretty uncommon to see anything smaller than 100 won anymore). I have a few 1 and 5 won coins from the 70's and early 80's that my dad got when he was on a short duty assignment there about 1984 or so.

When I was there the exchange rate was about 1200 won to the US dollar. Believe it's close to 1000 now (more from the dollar weakening than the won strengthening, but a little bit of both.)

Wish I saved some paper money... I have tons of coins from there though.

1 dollar it is 1,330.99 South Korean Won, the 1 and 5 won coin i saw in the mentioned coin/stamp set my brother got a pic is coming i just don't have my camera right now. His 1 coin is from 1983 and his 5 coin is from 1971, they may have stopped making them. Daggarjon i will have to take a look i have a ton of coins and about 5 1,000 bills. My dad thinks he heard that they may start making bills higher than 10,000 ($7.5).

I was looking online though its from Wikipedia for all the doubters but there are circulating 1 and 5 won coins though they must just be rarely used, also on wikipedia it says that in June 2009 a 50,000 is going to be released, Daggarjon PM sent

    Not as blurry now...

My Korean first-year typeset is now viewable (not blurry).

Every coin is the first year that each type was made. In BU condition (or as darn close as possible).
