You don't see me too much over here in the World Coin section but I've bought Bolivian twice in the past two days and may pick up a few more. Today it was an 1861 8 Sole coin.

I stated in a thread yesterday that we had a rather large amount of Bolivian coinage roll into the shop yesterday. A few other countries as well and some decent stuff.

I liked the coin and over half an ounce of silver in it so I picked it up today.

Any comments and expertise would be welcome. I graded this coin a VF and, believe me, I'm flying by the seat of my pants on this one.

Real nice piece of Heavy Silver. Looks like it was minted in Santiago, Chile for the Bolivians. I have been collecting quite a few nice Latin American pieces recently too. I love the Bolivar image and have him on perhaps 20 different silver pieces. But alas, no Bolivian pieces...Yet!!! :high5: Traci

The power of the dark side has you in its grasp :eek:hya:

And you did just fine on the grading ;)

I too love the 19th century Bolivian coinage. :thumb: I have a couple myself but haven't gotten serious about them since everything else keeps me pretty much broke. :goofer:

    Great share! :D

    Ribbit :)

Nice coin Clembo. I agree with your assessment of VF. Maybe a little better on the reverse. The obverse also seems to be well struck - I seem to recall these are often struck with weak busts on the obverse. Not so on your coin. The coin was minted at Potosi in Bolivia (this is shown by the monogram of the letters PTI superimposed).

The bust on the obverse is that of Simon Bolivar, Latin America's George Washington. He was an extraordinary character, and an able leader.

Thanks for the input Eduard. I'll take anything I can get.
We do have the Krause books at work so I was able to look this one up and determine the mintmark.
I was also aware of Simon Bolivar.
The grading will be an issue with me on coins like this I'm afraid. I had a person comment on weak strikes in another forum as well so it seems I chose well. We have several of these actually and I did notice a great deal of flatness on others. One in particular still retained original luster but less detail than mine.

Thanks for your input as well Doug.

Don't be surprised if I put an occasional world coin up though. I wouldn't call it the "dark side" as much as "expansion". ;)

These are not coins that I'll pursue at shows but if they walk in the door and I like them I will pick them up for the beauty of the coin and nothing else. Tend to be a lot cheaper at work and that always helps.

Hey, thanks to everyone for their comments. You'll see more in the future I'm sure.

I, too, Like Bolivian coins though I don't buy as many as I would like. (SIGH) As for grade; I'd say spot on.
