Yes, I know it's a coin from Egypt but I don't know what it's worth or the denomination. Also I think it's King Farouk on the coin but is this the last coin that he was on? Anyone know? thx

Well Fret...That definitely is Ole King Farouk, but I do not know if it was his last coin. I think Nasser overthrew the old fool in 1952. I think you add around 570 ??? years to the Arab date to get the real date. Traci :secret:

The date says 1938, and no it wasn't the last coin he was on. He was on a set of 5, 10, 20 Piasters in 1939. But This 10 mills is of value, but cannot say an exact value. but i would grade it with my humble opinion Vf-Ef.

    Cheers,

"The coin you refer to is from Egypt, looks to be the size of 10 millemes, bust is of King Farouk, the date on the left 1938, is the Christian year (AD). The date on the right 1357, is the equivalent in Islam, as in AH 1357. The Islamic calendar begins in 622 AD, but is based on the lunar cycle, thus proceeds faster than the solar year."

The last coin featuring King Farouk is a 1 milleme from 1950 (AH 1369).

Is there a website or a book that can help in ID'ing Egyptian coins easily. I have a hard time finding the date & denomination.

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

The denomination is the large numbers in the center of the reverse (in this case 10). The date on Egyptian coins is usually printed both in the Arabaic calendar and the Western calendar. In this case, the date on the left of the reverse (1938) is the Western, and on the right is the Arabic (1357). The Arabic numerals are very similar to ours, since ours descended from the Arabic numerals.

Ok the plus side is that the Krause world coin catalog has a international numeral translation but here is kind of what the problem is.....

This coin was labeled Egypt 10 Para 1277 year 5. I agree it's 10 Para & the date does say 1277 but what do they mean by year 5?

AH1277 was the ascension year initiating the reign during which the coin was minted, but your actual coin was minted in AH1281, the fifth year of that reign. This was a common system in Arab countries.

The western date on the coin will match the ascension date, not the mintage date.

My favorite King Farouk coin is this hexagonal 2 piasters from 1944.
