has anyone else had the same problems trying to order halves from their bank?? I get lies after lie about they can't get them from the govt. or they are limited to 1 box and customers are limited to one roll, or they don't have room in the safe for them. 5/3 bank is the worst, I have a manager who just doesn't want to deal with them so they make up stuff lke they don't circulate and have been recalled by the government
Probably true about vault size. Try going into the main bank if you're in a large city, especially if it's an older building with a big vault. ALSO - Having an account with more than a few hundred $'s also helps. This is a suggestion and is not intended as any sort of insult.
yes. it's hard to buy unc rolls from the banks in new york city. to get half dollar unc roll. i just order them from the mint.
Many banks take the difference between personal accounts and commercial ( business) accounts very seriously. If you have the business account, there should be no problem getting boxes of halves or any denomination as the bank charges for that either directly or indirectly in the cost of the commercial account. However, if you are asking for specific dates/mm, that is a whole different story. Guarda transport uses boxes that are not marked nor are the coin rolls visible to insure the correct number of rolls are there like String boxes. If your bank is served by Guarda, the vault manager won't know what is the date inside the box. If he opens it to see, then they have to verify to next customer the number of rolls by counting them. If you are a big customer, they might open one or 2 they can use for the tellers, but they have to like you. It costs the bank money to obtain the coins. If they find you are returning the left over coins to them to process, they will probably stop selling them to you without a commercial account. My Rabobank branch is one of the friendliest and customer service banks I know, and even they have limits. Wells Fargo used to be great years ago,but they have hardened up also. Jim
With all of the economic stuff going on, I wouldn't be surprised if the days are gone where you can open an account with $100 and then buy and dump boxes of coins on a rregular basis. Simple math will show that this costs the bank a fair amount of money for this "service" that they are offering you. In return, they get to roll around in the piles of money your $100 dormant account is bringing in! As someone else has said, I'm not implying this is what you're doing - but a lot of people do do this. As an example, there's a local credit union here that is now charging 75 cents each time you use your debit card more than 15 times for that month. Cliche's might be apprpriate: The writing is on the wall. You don't need a weathercock to see which way the wind is blowing, etc. Basically, get 'em while you can!!!
My local bank, the primary bank I use, does not stock them. They just don't have the demand to stock them and use up that space in their vault, so they simply don't order any. I went to HSBC, (a smaller building, no less) where I do have an account, (used only for Paypal) and got them 1-2-3. You might want to look into HSBC, I do believe they are an international, let along national bank. In regards to the 5/3rd bank. When I used to travel to Toledo, Ohio every year I would see them there. I thought it was the strangest thing, until I found out that it was formed when the 5th National Bank bought out the 3rd national bank! Another anecdote....A friend of mine on another continent got a spam email saying that his account there needed updating. He commented that he KNEW it was a spam because there could be no such bank with that name! I had a good laugh and explained to him that it does indeed exist!
finally got some took awhile to find a branch that would work with you, had enough money in the account they didn't even ask my account number at any of the branches I called, got $4,500 in halves coming from brinks, hope to find some 40% silver, have got lucky in the past but also have gone through 10,000 worth when I worked and found zero!! one 5/3 branch wanted to charge me 2.95 for each box, federal reserve in cincinnati has plenty on hand and they charge them nothing , sure there is a small charge to the bank for this but that the cost of business, really, how many people do roll searching when you figure the numbers of people that have bank accounts, I bet it is less the .05% of the population, plus I dump the coins off at other banks or the casino, they'll take any money!!
I have not had much resistance when ordering them. The main thing they ask me to do is promise that I will come to pick them up because they don't want to be stuck with them. Go in with a smile to a bank you have an account with and be polite and they will usually help you. If the first branch you try isn't willing to help go to a different location. Some people just aren't willing to take the effort to order them.
i have no probem getting them from my bank. i get them, look thru them and then spend them i think some banks dont want to deal with them because of dumpers, people who order boxes after boxes of them and then dump them off at other banks. I bet it gets old after awhile if banks get this routine from collectors. i think it ruins it for other collectors but "Hey it your moeny -you can do whatever you want with it"
