I have a proof Canadian silver dollar that is already damaged so I want to mess around with it a bit. I want to tone the heck out of it. Other than sticking it in a window sill for eons, what are some other secrets that I can do to tone it quickly. I have always heard of the potato trick, but does that really work? Any suggestions? Thanks.
Wrap it in a taco bell napkin. I've heard that works well....something about the taco bell sulfur in the paper.
Fire! I've gotten some crazy colors from holding them over the stove top, an inch or two over the flame. Be careful though they can turn black real quick.
After you eat TB, that sulfur smell isn't coming from the napkin...if you know what I mean! Ok, but once I do that what do I do with it?
Ideas that come to mind but for which I have no idea what results will occur: • rotobeast mentioned slow heat baking with various ingredients here • Blowtorch (also try this after coating the coin with other things that will burn off and leave an altered surface: grease, motor oil, petroleum jelly, peroxide, the fun stuff you should mess with outdoors or see done on MythBusters that they say not to do at home. ^_^ • Try radical temperature shock: heat up slowly then dip in ice cold water... (use tongs to transfer the hot coin to the bucket of water, and be careful.) • Maybe a (toxic) chemical like cobalt that's used to treat gun metal as a heat barrier or something like anthracite powder (hard coal) that is used for powder coatings of metals.
I was gonna say blowtorch myself Joe but if you do try this DO NOT HOLD THE COIN BETWEEN YOUR FINGERS!. Tongs are helpful.
1-olive oil coating, then put it into a slit in a potato, wrap in foil and bake, or 2- coat with dandruff shampoo.
I seem to recall someone mentioning the blue paper towels that you get for your windshield at gas stations, haven't tried that but would be interested in seeing pictures of your before and after coin...if you survive the weekend. I found an ordinary canadian quarter in my yard that has some of the most intense toning I've ever seen, although it is also very black...it was burried in the ground and I'm wondering if ordinary soil and elements could do the trick. Maybe leave it in a cat's litter box, I think a cat could probably tinkle the copper off a zincoln. Anyone got some links to similar posts? I'd love to see some before/after pics of the more experimental type.
that was 2 different methods. Wonder what would happen if you coated in the shampoo and made the potato? Just don't forget and eat the potato.
