I'm still slowly going through the latest batch of the "uncleans" and got to this: 1.56g and 11mm I'm guessing it's a late Roman, around 400-600 CE, but I've never seen a reverse like this and don't even know where to start my search. Thanks in advance.
The huge E says Byzantine to me, there is your start point. For its size use Pentanummium ( hope i have that correct ) For the Emperor try Justinian i. Hope this helps.
Interesting coin - could it be a Justin I issue from Antioch with Tyche on the reverse? Here is the labrum listing: http://labarum.info/lbr/show.php?coin=1110 If so, I think these are rather scarce. Not sure what's going on with the backwards E, but if this is right, the OP reverse is upside-down.
Good call @Marsyas Mike. The exact same Reverse is listed for both Justin & Ian Not sure how to tell which one it is though.
Great! Thank you, @tenbobbit and @Marsyas Mike. I'm not familiar with the Byzantine coinage and the rest of the coins in the batch were from 306-450 so it didn't even occur to me to think of that. Here's a correct photo of the reverse:
Here's one of Justin and Justinian together (Apr.-Aug. 527): These are interesting for being among the very last issues featuring a pagan deity (Tyche).
