I found this 1983 penny missing the "Trust". It's not worn down but was never printed at all, with a smooth surface where it should've been printed. Has anyone seen this before, is this a common error?
First, welcome to the neighborhood @NewPennyHunter ! It is probably the result of a grease-filled die. This is a very common occurrence, especially on pennies. If you use the CT Search function at the upper right of the page and enter "grease-filled die" you will probably find a bunch of threads on this subject.
Thanks for the replies guys.... appreciate the info. Being new to the coin game, I'm finding that the more subtle errors seem to be more collectable than the obvious anomalies. I have a lot to learn! Lol #TheHuntContinues
It looks like it might be the result of environmental damage where a portion of the coin has been eaten away by corrosion. It looks like there is a step in the material and missing plating (substrate exposed). Might have spent time in the ground. Grease is also plausible.
That's either minted from a large spot of grease or it was damaged by acid to eat the metal away. There is a slightly different color to it. Either way, it's nice to have and fun to find but it's not worth a lot.
I don't know, it doesn't look like anything post-mint took that section out. Look at the uniformity of the crusty old thing, and then, right in that section, poof, what the hell happened? I don't think that's PMD. Look at the crease coming off the nose. Is it the demarcation of a now crusty lamination? Were the letters in that section greased off? I don't know what else to suggest, but that doesn't look like PMD to me.
