Yeah, so you are probably reading this in anticipation of some great coin book I found at Barnes and Noble, but I must say this post is for the opposite end of the coin enthusiast spectrum. Today I went to Barnes and Noble to buy a good book (decided on Wicked if anyone was curious). I did what any other customer would, approached the cash register with my money and book in hand. The person in front of me, to my great shock, recieved the prez dollars in change from the cash register! He naturally looked at them as if saying, "What the heck?" but eventually went on his way. Meanwhile, I'm practially sweating with anticipation thinking, "Will I get one? Is it the 2009s? Don't let me get a bill! Don't let me get a bill!" I get to the counter, pay for the book, and the change to be recieved was $3.63. And, then it happened! I recieved my first three circulated dollar coins. I have yet to see these in circulation! It took all I had not to jump in excitement. I looked and sure enough, 2 Washingtons and a Madison! Kudos to Barnes and Noble for circulating the dollars! I figured I would do the same since I'm not a prez dollar fan. I kept the Madison for kicks and spent the two Georges at McDonald's for lunch. Man, what a day! Anyone else see these dollars in circulation or am I the only fortunate one?
I've only ever recieved one presidential dollar in change. It was a George Washington that I got in 2007. I don't remember where, I was not yet a coin collector at the time, but I do still have it. I am in need of a trip to BN soon, perhaps I will get one in change as well!
Several of the stores around here get them from customers, but only give them back in change if someone asks for them. I asked why one time and was told because most people don't like them. So I make sure all the cashiers know that I welcome any "weird" change. On a side note, I loved that book. Very good read!
I have given hundreds of dollars of Prez bucks out but have never received any in change. I also applaud B&N.
So far the only ones I've ever received in change were instead of a quarter. I don't try to spend them since I get way to many problems trying to do that. To many people just don't want them.
Around here the car washes dispense Sacagawea's and Prez Dollars to pay for your wash. I used to have a hoard of 200 sacs, but then I just brought them to the bank to buy other coins and bullion. I guess the figure some people will think they're "tokens" and not real money, forcing them to go to the car wash again. Sales psychology is a funny thing!
My best Barnes & Noble surprise was about 3-4 years ago, a 1920 cent in my change. Up to that time it was the earliest dated coin I have ever gotten in change, but last year I managed to find a 1909 and a 1910 in change.
