How can you tell mint error or post mint damage for brockage or planchet chip? Where do you find errors like Struck through cloth, cuds, rotated dies, off center, or die clashes? Can you find them in circulated bank rolls?
I don't collect errors but would hold on to them if i found one, and I would like to have an example set of cent errors if they are not too expensive. I just want one to show my nephew who has just started collecting pennies from bank rolls. He is 6 and loves to find wheat cents and the LP1's and LP2's without the D. mint mark. Thanks for your help in advance, Kent

    Hi,

Although it has become more difficult, errors and die varieties can be found in rolls of coins all the time. The difficulty in determining whether or not a coin is a Mint Error or a coin that has been tampered with is that there has to be an understanding of the Minting process that is too long to explain here.

There are finite possibilities as to what can occur at the Mint and there is an infinite number of ways that a coin can be tampered with.

I am not sure that I can do this but I do see other links getting posted. I won't add a link but you can do a search for Found In Rolls or Ask About Coins and you can see where I have articles and or pictures pertaining to things that you can look for.

    Thanks,
    Bill

Nice question. Looking forward to an answer, or an online source of information.
