I found this coin in my collection and noticed that it had a weak strike. Upon further inspection I realized that it is not a copper clad planchet. It is a solid silver color planchet of an unknown metal. Is this coin genuine?
it looks sort of like a 1963 date on the image... that would be coin silver. and looks like it has a few stories to tell.
Lead Head Good call, It does in fact have a lead coating on it. What was the purpose of coating it with lead?
How common are lead counterfeits? It's obviously an older coin. This one even has reeded edges. Does it have any collecting value?
I've come across a number of counterfeit quarters, in a variety of alloys and compositions. While some people collect counterfeits, they don't have much market value.
Didn't even think of a lead counterfeit. Makes perfect sense though. Easy to manufacture and when new, it would have had a nice shiny surface. If it was indeed made around 1965 I'm sure someone was trying to take advantage of the change over from coin silver to clad coinage. But given how soft lead is, it could have been made six months ago. Personally, I wouldn't want to risk lead poisoning carrying around a pocket full of lead
Is there any way the coin could have been silver? Even thought I know that there were no silver quarters in '65
