First off - I'm a coin newbie - so any guidance in understanding this is greatly appreciated! I recently acquired a batch of wheaties, and have begun the process of logging them into my collection, when I came across this one particular wheatie. As you will see in the image, there is an extra mark below the 9 in 1936. How would this coin be classified? Is it deemed an error coin, or just another penny like any other? Any help to understand this is greatly appreciated! RichRider PS - if the image doesn't work - here's a link to it: http://mrhendricks.com/1936penny.jpg
Howdy richrider - Welcome to the Forum !! This is just a guess, but I would say it is either the result of a die gouge or die chip. I'm kind of leaning towards a gouge because I've never seen a chip that symetrical. One of the error guys will be along and they may be able to give you a better answer.
A die gouge would be my guess. The size and resolution of the affected area is too small to arrive at a definitive diagnosis.
