    Howdy peeps, :D

I recently acquired a WARK-71 Samuel Johnson Conder Token, which is the rare edge inscription variety of the two tokens with the same obverse & reverse (71 & 71a). The problem I have, the edge inscription is different than the book says:

    http://www.napoleonicmedals.org/coins/dhwarwick71a.htm

The edge inscription is identical except for BIGG'S, which mine says BIGG'SS. The extra "S" is clearly visible and it isn't a fluke, so is Dalton & Hamer wrong or do I have a one-of-a-kind? :D

    Any ideas? :D

Is it possible it is a doubling of some kind? I seem to recall a similar phenomenon on the modern dollar coins.

There is extra space between the G and first S, which is the ' and it didn't make it on the edge and the spacing between the 2 S's is too exact, so I do not believe it's an error from the machine that put the edge lettering on the coin, I believe the machine was "told" to put two S's there. ;)

    Otay, here's the skinny . . . .

Henry's last name is Biggs and the English way of making that possessive, is to add an apostrophe "S" at the end, which makes it BIGGS'S. :D So the problem is D&H. :goof:

I spoke with Bill McKivor about the token, since he's owned one before, and he set the record straight. So the edge is correct but now we have no clue if this is one of the six known survivors or was there 8 known and this is now #9. :goofer:

Well, lets just believe it is one of the 6 known until proven otherwise. :)

Nice token but I don't know much at all about these tokens, but I looking at the post when I can to learn. I'm watching some on ebay maybe I'll get a good deal on one, what are they worth.

I have to answer your question carefully, since you pluralized token and you might mean other Conder Tokens. ;)

On mine, another one like it, but in a little better condition, sold recently for around $300 so mine is worth less but exactly how much, I'm not sure. I'm going to keep mine until I have another one then I'll sell the one in lesser condition. :D

As to other Conder tokens, they vary in price from dirt cheap to more than what I want to spend. :goofer: I say collect what appeals to you and set your own price on each and as you get outbid, you will get a good feel for what they fetch and you can adjust your bids to win more auctions. :thumb:

    Ps: Here's a nice Conder:

It didn't go too high and it is in nice condition to boot. :D

The correction to the edge lettering for this token is noted in the back of the D&H book in the Corrigenda. Depending on the publishing date of your book, it is also noted in the front of the book where Allan Davisson has a listing of all corrections/additions noted up until the copy was published.
