I have what I think is a Gallienus that has most of the silver still in tact on the obverse and virtually all of the reverse in tact, but none of the detail is visible. Comments very welcome.
Surely a Gallienus but no idea about the reverse. Here's my most silvered one : Ae Antoninianus 260-268 AD 22mm 3.8g Antioch GALLIENVS AVG / SOLI INVICTO PXV Almost full silvering still intact
Not all "silvering" found on coins today is the result of the original silvering process. Some of it can come from burial and post-burial processes where silver, or even non-silver oxides with a silvery hue, migrate to the surface. On a coin with this degree of wear that would be my first suspicion, though more thorough investigation would be required to be sure. SC
Inspector43, otlichnik is right on, what's on your coin isn't original silvering . The follis I scored long ago does have nearly complete original silvering, pictured below.
@Al Kowsky Thanks for the feedback. So, what I have is an interesting Gallienus. It is even more interesting when I consider the great feedback from the members. I'm good with that.
