Are you a sports fan? Have a favorite team (baseball, basketball, football, hockey, soccer, etc.)? College or Pro? Have a favorite player (including bowling, golf, billiards, tennis, volleyball, etc.)?

Have you ever wondered, "What coin or coins is/are associated with sports (Not Olympic) and/or athletes?"

I have, so I did some research. It would take four or five posts just to present all the sports coin commemoratives and memorabilia available to numismatists, so I'm only going to acquaint you with one sport's coin venue (football).

Some coins featuring football are struck as commemoratives honoring the college bowl games (Orange Bowl, Chik-Fil-A Bowl, Cotton Bowl, Rose Bowl, etc.).

Others honor pro football's Super Bowl winners. Highland Mint, in Florida, has been given the rights to produce the coins used in the Coin Tosses (usually striking 5,000 pieces for fans and collectors). Sometimes a coin is struck commemorating a game with 1,000 or more given to the first 1,000 or more fans attending the game. After some games a special MVP coin is minted and in still other instances the stadium (ballpark), itself is honored. There are issues of coins featuring a Hall of Fame recipient along with his record-setting accomplishments.

I will try to present you with photos of some of these Football coins.

Here's Highland Mint's Coin Toss coin for Superbowl XLII (42). This one is bronze:

That said, I just pulled one from circulation today. Not that easy to find one these days.

    hontonai:

Yes, there are several legal tender coins featuring non Olympic sports.

Here's two 50 Cents coins issued by South Africa (photos courtesy of Don's World Coin Gallery):

There are quite a few struck by/for some Central and South America countries as well as a few Caribbean island nations featuring Pan-Am and other sports competitions besides the Olympics.
