Can you share how this set got started and what some of the goals are?

 

Absolutely!

The set got started by me coming across a few thousand bucks profit from my currency trading adventures on the foreign exchange markets.

I had an old friend, Mike, from Wallingford, CT who's brother Tom, from Texas, taught him about coins and even gave him a bunch to deal. So I was introduced to the coin world through him.

I subscribed to Coinworld about two years ago and bought my first copy of the 2007 Red book.

Fast forward August 09.

Like I said, I had come across that money through trading, so me being sometimes undiciplined with money, I wanted to finally emerge myself and convert some of my thousands into valuable assets, coins.(Something I promised my old bud who i'm sadly no longer friends with, that I would do once I had a few k to spare)

This is where I discovered CoinTalk(Through google).

After making some very beginner like posts at the start(wow already at 118 posts), I feel I was helped by some of the best on this forum(you know who you are) and I even met one of them(Illini420) at the first California(where I live) coin show this past weekend and he taught me so much. Illini and I walked around(for well over 5 overs, right Illini? ), met the dealers, looked closely at coins, got a little grading 101 lesson, and even bought that Mercury.

So, this is how I got this set going. Sofar most of these are from eBay and one(the 1921 merc) is from that recent coin show attended this past weekend by me and Illini420.

My goals..

One would be future longterm financial appreciation through common key date U.S coins with low mintage. I am afterall an investor and money is my first priorty(sorry to sound so greedy)

Second would be collector value. I just want to own some nice things that I know have history behind it. I think the older U.S coins pre-ww2 era are so much more beautiful than most of our newer ones and to hold onto history like this really strikes a raw good nerve inside me. Almost a love of country.

Third, would be owning some bullion along with my coins. Silver is headed up long term and owning a bar or two wouldn't be far out of reach for me.

Great write up. Sounds like you did your homework before diving in. I wish more folks would do the same. Looking forward to seeing future additions.

All the coins are great, but I'm partial to Peace Dollars and that one is beautiful. Hope you continue with your collection.

Yeah, we made a few trips around the show for sure... easy to do that at a smaller show like that one. Just wait until the Long Beach show in a couple of weeks!! Better wear comfortable shoes!!!

What makes buying from the show so much better than eBay is that you were able to see half a dozen 1921-D Mercury Dimes in various grades (and various prices) before deciding on the awesome example that you bought.

And hopefully I have you convinced that the 1918 Lincoln/Illinois Commemorative is a much better coin than the 2009 Lincoln Commemorative If so, just take your time to find one that you really like, there are tons of them out there.

 

Just wanted to add the 1918 Lincoln Commem that I used to own (wish I still had it):

 

The classic commemoratives are great coins. Some of the issues like the Illinois are extremely difficult to find with great eye appeal. I can't believe you let that beauty slip away. Another commem tough to locate with great eye appeal is the 1935 Connecticut. Check out the one in the current Heritage Auction. Now this is my kind of coin, PIZAZZ.

You got some nice coins.

I see from your post that the 21D dime is in a slab. The first 21D that I bought was raw. I needed to learn how to authenticate the 21D before I bought it. I'm curious how many reading this post know what to look for in the way of an altered date on the 1921? Maybe some of the others at CT can explain what style the 9 should be etc.

I visited the ANA museum store about 20 years ago & purchased a reprint from the Numismatist which explained several common counterfeits. I read about the 1921 altered dates in the reprint. You can either read the books yourself or you can rely on buying slabs & rely the advice of experts.

BNB, IMO you should learn how to authenticate a 3-legger before you buy one. I once passed on a good looking raw 3-legger because I didn't know how to authenticate it. That loss got me angry so I learned how to authenticate the piece for myself.

Nice 21-D. That coin looks like you spend some time seeking out a nice example. Well done.

 

:bigeyes: I hope you are joking. There are lots of ways to describe that coin, but I must admit that "eye appealing" was not among the adjectives I would use.

If you are/were serious, different strokes for different folks.

 

I like the classics. The new stuff just don't light a fire for me. The Merc, Morgan and Peace are where its at! Nice eye appeal.
