I was at the bank so I thought I'd pick up a bunch of half dollar rolls to search. Fortunately, the bank wasn't busy. Well, the tellers looks all over the place and only came up with two. No, not two rolls, two coins. This is amazing, almost as if half dollars aren't even legal tender anymore.

I rushed to the bank this morning to buy 50 rolls of halves and they only had 20 rolls. The good news is that when I searched those 20 rolls, I found the following:

    5-1964-D's
    3-1966's
    2-1967
2-1968-D's (one looks very much like a clad coin)
    2-1969-D's
    and
    1-1943 Walker :)

    2-1982-P's
    1-1999-D

I figured that someone must have dumped their Kennedy collection recently and the teller confirmed that her father had just cashed in a bunch of his old coins. I told her to tell him thank you for me. Sometimes the bear gets you and sometimes you get the bear I guess.

Happy hunting to the rest of you half-hoarders out there.

I picked up 50 rolls yesterday and found very little silver:

    4-1967
    1-1968

The good news: There does appear to be a fair number of early to mid 1980s coins in good shape, something I don't see very often. This might be a good time to fill in some holes in the Dansco album.

If you are seeing AU or better early 80's coins then you are seeing an anomaly, IMO, as those tend to be some of the worst condition ones out there! Some of them are keepers!

I went to the Credit Union and asked for half dollar rolls. The teller said she had never seen any rolls of halves there. Not a good start. I hope to hit more banks/CUs over the next week, hopefully with better results.

Credit Unions normally don't handle alot of coinage. At least not where I live. A bank is the best bet. Better yet, when buying large quantities find the main bank. They usually act as the main depository for the branches. This means they do the coin ordering and collect the odities such as halves, Ike's and SBA's.

Just a casual glance through the rolls I opened last night revealed a couple of nice 1982s, 1983s, and 1984s. They aren't BU but are probably close to AU-50. That is fine for my Kennedy set because I'm pulling everything for it out of circulation anyway. If I get multiple keepers of rarer years I will set them aside.

Well, the Coin God giveth and the Coin God taketh away...I searched through another 37 rolls and not one silver coin to be had. I did however, see a 1969 in the teller's coin tray and asked for it. He said it wasn't silver just dirty. I said that I'd like it anyway and he gave it to me.

What I did find in the 37 rolls was:

    7-1982-P's
    3-1999-P's
    1-1998-S

    And
    1-1969-D

Don't know how to tell the 1998-S from the 1998-S matte. Any clues?

Very true about the "Coin God." However, your recent success prompted me to visit a bank branch today that I'd only been to twice before. Neither time did they have any rolls of halves. Today they did. I grabbed 25 that looked as though they'd come from several different locations.

Day 3: the bank that I go to is all out until Friday.. got there last 6 rolls here is what I got in those rolls.

    2-67
    1-69
    3-99D

stoped by my coin store and they said they would take $2.00 for all of my 64 and $.65 for 65-69 per coin. (shrug)

that is probably good for this week will try and see what I get next week. glad to perk some interest..

How common/uncommon is it to get Franklin halves in your rolls that you all search through?

Tried the Credit Union and they had a total of four JFK's. Then to a bank's drive-up where I found a total of two JFK coins.

Will go to our two primary banks tomorrow and see what I can get as far as JFK rolls and rolls of the Ocean nickels.

    :) :)

I got my first 3 rolls last week and feel lucky. the first roll i got had 2 64s and half silver clad, the second roll was all 71 and up but the third roll had 4 64s and all but 3 of the rest were silver clad. I can't wait to get some more.
Now I just need to figue out were to sell the silver.

    And the Silver goes to....

Due to my recent luck, I have decide to start two more Kennedy halves collections. My grand total from 650 rolls was:

    7-1964-D's
    1-1965
    4-1966
    3-1967
    4-1968-D's
    3-1969
    and
    1-1943 Walker

Plus a lot of pretty good condition clad dates from 1971-2000 and one 1998-S proof coin. I think I've wiped out one bank's supply - now to the other banks and Wal-mart. Mua-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

I think that I probably happened to get to the bank just after someone in my area dumped their silver collection for face value. The second half of my search yielded almost nothing from 370 rolls. It was a fun week though. Thank you to everyone that shared their experiences.

WOW! Does your Wal Mart actually carry halves?
My just sends them back. There is a nice lady that I've tried to work with, but she can't seem to call me back about anything.
    Well, Good Luck!

Well, we have a Super Wal-mart and they have just about anything under the sun. And you know what they say at Wal-mart, "It's our People" :) <== Wal-mart symbol

Mostly I go by the price tag in the dealer's display case :p But since this one came from circ I expect it's not the matte finish; the psople who spent the money on the matte finished proofs weren't careless enough with them to spend them (for the most part).

So I'm guessing there is no real difference??? JUST THE PRICE?

Quite UNcommon. I've found 10 Franklins in the past 11 months of steady, regular searching about 75 rolls per week. I've read about others who have found more while doing the same thing, but I'd say my luck with getting Franklins has been about average.
