Who is covering for who? coming 10/09 no Insurance Coverage can be offered on ebay, is it because of all the of reports of mail thefts out there. I saw were a postal carrier in Florida was selling alot of things on ebay and at yard sales and someone got to looking and they found out he was stealing packages and selling the stuff!! ( hope he goes to jail for a while ) I bring this up because I sold someone a coin on ebay and sure enough the tracking number showed it was delievered but he never got the coin. Lucky for both of us his credit card company refunded him his money and because he knew I shipped the coin and it got ripped off paypal didn't take my money. He gave me poss. feedback because I did everything I could do from my end, but this is a perfect example of how sellers will end up losing there money and coins if they don't go ahead and pay for the Insurance Coverage. I believe the post office knows they will make alot more money from this because most people don't purchase the insurance when they buy on ebay but the seller will now so they don't lose there coins and money!!! Let me know what you think and should we stop selling on ebay? Thanks itsallngoodtime Bob
Please provide a link? I believe hat you are misconstruing what the change will be and that insurance coverage will become mandatory (as opposed to not offered) from sellers.
According to the current posted rules e-bay has not yet discontinued the insurance option for buyers. http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/listing-shipping.html "Insurance: Sellers may offer buyers insurance and extra services provided through the carrier at actual cost. These services include, but are not limited to: Certificate of Mailing, Certified Mail, Collect on Delivery, Delivery Confirmation, Insured Mail, Registered Mail, Restricted Delivery, Return Receipt, Signature Confirmation and Special Handling. We’ll soon be discontinuing the shipping insurance option. " Mark, I don't have the mail anymore but e-bay did mention that they will discontinue the option for buyers to pay seperately for insurance because even if they opt out of it, the seller is still responsible for getting it delivered. The burden is now on the seller but the seller can include the actual insurance costs into the shipping fee. IMO It will take awhile for buyers to get used to inflated shipping fees but eventually the free shipping will be next to impossible if anyone wants to make a profit selling on e-bay.
It seem to me that from what I've heard from sellers is that they will have to add it to there shipping cost or just pay for it, isn't that pretty much mandatory!!! come on what I was trying to say is that ebay and paypal will give there money back if they say they didn't recieve it and they did so way pay for insurance, so now the only way you will be covered is to pay for it yourself and the post office will make more money!! I once worked for a company that sold extended warranty's and most people never needed it and the company made millions in profits from those unused warranty's, isn't that what the post office will do? thats my point.
Yes, it will be mandatory, which is what I indicated in my previous post. But in your first post you wrote "... coming 10/09 no Insurance Coverage can be offered on ebay..." So frankly, I'm not quite sure what you're trying to say.
Hey guys just want to clear up one thing here. itsallngoodtime wrote that it was a postal carrier from Florida that was stealing all those goods. Well it was a UPS driver from Florida. Here's the story: http://www.nbc-2.com/Global/story.asp?S=10927366 Lou
Sorry I was wrong you're right it was a UPS didn't mean to say anything bad about the USPS! right they have problems too. But it was UPS this time.
Remember, it is the seller's responsibility to get the package to the buyer. So such postal options as Delivery Confirmation, Insurance or Registered is strictly for the seller's protection. If the USPS records show delivery via a confirmation number, the seller is off the hook. It's then up to the buyer to deal with the PO and find out what happened. If the USPS records do not show delivery via a confirmation number, then the seller has to deal with the PO. If there's no confirmation number, i.e., no DC, Insurance or Registered, and no delivery, then the seller has to refund. EVERYTHING I sell on eBay goes out with DC. And above a certain amount ($50 in my case) I take insurance. eBay has things leaning so far the buyer's way that as a seller you HAVE to operate this way. The REAL scam on eBay is buyers (supposedly) returning items for a refund, then shipping back an empty box with DC. PO shows you got the package, but you don't get the item back. eBay sees something returned so forces the seller to refund. The seller ends up with no item and no money. Short of not selling on eBay, I don't know how to counter this scam.
(Remember, it is the seller's responsibility to get the package to the buyer.) However here's the rest of the story.....because this happen to me as a seller on e bay..... I sold a 1904 O unc. Morgan to a woman in LA. (at the same time I had sold about 15 items packed them up and posted all of them.) All were DC....all were received but the morgan.... The woman lived in an apt. complex. I got an e mail saying she had not received her item.As a seller not wanting a neg. I first went to the post office to do a tracking on the missing package. I got the forms and then was told that the person who purchased the item had to be the one tracking the item or put a claim in for it. So the buyer had to start the paper work not the shipper. thus I mailed another morgan with the paper work and asked her to start the forms. Now she was very cool about everything long story short she did e mail me saying after I sent her the second coin and papers that she received the first and second coin and wanted to buy or pay me for the second morgan.BUT you have no control as a seller or shipper....you cannot file a claim with the USPS again it must come from the buyer! If not your done! You loose end of story...... As a seller I have always used DC and any item over $50 you paid for insurance or I did not ship! As alot of us collectors I am also a PT dealer to horse trade to support my hobby. As such I cannot afford to pay e bay fee's , Pay Pal fee's, etc then take a hit on a $300 coin. I have had other friends who took a return with the box being empty. There should be insurance for sellers... and I can stand making a statement like this because to me insurance is a joke ! If you win you loose! Think about it...life ins. car ins. homeowners ins....like a dog chasing its tail what are you going to do once you catch it?:crying:
So are you saying in OCT there won't be any insurance at all unless you as the seller buy it but the buyer must file the forms, and if so what if they won't file the forms do you just lose everything? Bob
If you ship an item by USPS and it's lost, stolen etc....as the shipper you can't file a claim or put in the paper work for the loss. Only the person it's addressed to can! thus...if they wont play the usps insurance won't PAY!
I HATE GREEDBAY AND PAY YOUR PAL, THIS WILL END MY SELLING CAREER... YEAH!!! I will just stay with Coinzipauctions.com as one of my main sources of selling!:high5:
Go file at another post office because that is not what the postal regulations say. They say the claim can be filed by either party. From the USPS.gov website Who can file a claim? For domestic indemnity claims (Insured, Registered, COD, and Express Mail®) either the mailer or addressee (recipient) may file. However, if the article has Merchandise Return Service, only the permit holder may file. To file claims online go here http://www.usps.com/insuranceclaims/online/ That page also makes the statement that claims maybe filed by either the sender or the reciever.
I was going to say the one time I had a big issue the seller filed the claim I just needed to provide him some information and the check was mailed to me. Plus - even with other auction houses how are you going to avoid insurance. On ebay - no insurance for the coins I will not buy. Yeah it is the sellers responsibility to get me the coin and I do not mind paying a reasonable amount for insurance. Just part of doing the transaction.
Why? Just include the insurance in the shipping fee, it's only an extra couple of dollars. If you are worried about the difference to make a profit of one or two dollars per one hundred in insurance then I guess maybe it is time to stop.
I offer free S/H with insurance. If the coin is a high dollar coin I require signature confirmation. Its called C.Y.A....
Thanks for your input...but I swear that when I went to my local post office to get the pappers to file ...I was told that the person who it's addressed to can only make the claim.....and I must admit ...it did not make sense to me why it was that way. But this issue is over and done with ...she did receive her item and the replacement also. Thanks again Paddy
