Needless to say, there CAN'T be a contrail in space, given that it's a vacuum, but I'm willing to accept it as artistic license.

FWIW, the image that you showed of the NASA "medal" is actually a medallion representation of the Apollo 16 mission patch, which was somewhat of an homage to the NASA "meatball".

From NASA's website you'll find out that that symbol actually had nothing to do with space, but actually had to do with Aeronautics (e.g. planes) which is what the first A in NASA stands for... "The round red, white and blue insignia, nicknamed the "meatball," was designed by employee James Modarelli in 1959, NASA's second year. The design incorporates references to different aspects of the mission of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The round shape of the insignia represents a planet. The stars represent space. The red v-shaped vector represents aeronautics. The circular orbit around the agency's name represents space travel."

However, as mentioned, I certainly accept artistic license, and it's fun to know that that is what Gasparro was trying to do with that detail on the Ike.

Found this...from PCGS "This is the rare "Nightcrawler" DIVa 1S2-401. There are less than 20 known examples of this single-die variety! Hubbed-through reverse: a linear shard of die metal slid off the eagle's left leg, and embedded near the talon, giving the appearance that the eagle is clutching a large worm. "Gandyjai's DIVA PR Set" on the label. ODV with full serif R. Obverse with TDO - tripling best seen in the left serif of the R, Ike's hair, the N in the motto, and the 9. Reverse with DDR seen in AMERICA, most stars, Dollar, and olive leafs. IDDD die stage AA - the W and E a barely kissing."

Thanks for sharing that additional information on the Nightcrawler, fish4uinmd. That's what I wanted to post, but I was at work and didn't have time to fetch it.

Thanks for the Ike education...General Eisenhower was the first president I really remember as a child and I admired him.

I've always loved these coins as they came out just a little before I started collecting coins. In fact my only one bought from the US Gov't was a 1973-S Proof "Brown Ike". This is a proof in 40% silver.

I lived near Philadelphia in the early 1970's. I loved these coins and tried to buy every one I came across. Many I then spent. Once a doctor's office lowered my bill when they saw I was going to pay the entire bill ($30) in Ike Dollars. I was just a kid back then.

One thing people don't realize is how difficult it was even back then to find nice mint state coins: or any mint state coins. Everybody wanted some which they kept in their pockets for a bit and then got rid of. AU's were easy to find but real uncs were very difficult.

Once you know what you are looking for you can find them. In the Wild though, those days might never come again.
