Here is a little coin that breaks my heart.

I guess that somewhere in the last 150 years, someone did not have any idea people would be paying so much for a little quarter dollar.

Yes, but they probably did know that nobody would be paying them much for it. ;)

Makes me wonder what someone will pay for what we call run of the mill 200 years from now.

Reminds me of the Gold Plated Quarters sets being sold everywhere at a premium. I don't know why these sell like they are. Do people really think gold plating them make them that much more valuable??

They sure do believe it, Brian.
As a matter of fact, some people will believe any thing they're told.
Just for the record, there's only enough gold on those quarters to change the color. There's not enough to make them intrinsicly valuable.
Not to mention the fact that alterring a coin, destroys any numismatic value it may have had.

I call it the QVC Mentality. I see large sets of these selling on shows like this and you see them "Flying off the Shelves". If you market coins that have been crushed on the train tracks, the right way. You could retire a wealth "Numismatic".

You hit on the right word, Brian. "market"
It all has to do with how something is marketed.

Well I personally love these little california gold fractional coins. These are real gold through and through.
