The pics are shadowy but serviceable, I think. Shot this one myself, on my iPhone. Through the plastic, obviously. I’ve come a long way on the photography front, but still have a long way to go. In hand, the coin is just a tiny bit whiter looking, as I recall, though the faint goldish tone is there. It is rather exaggerated in the NGC images on the cert page (see link in previous post).
Got it. It is a slider, but I saw it as low grade MS from the beginning. Clearly, we need a thread on determining wear versus contact marks, as too many collectors grade silver dollars by counting the bagmarks, or look for luster breaks in photographs, which are not reliable enough.
A 1921 Peace Dollar is a high relief coin design. The details, even on a MS coin look worn. The hair around the ear is always a dead giveaway. I love Peace Dollars and the set in lower grades is easier to assemble than most realize. In MS-64 and higher, it is tough. A very nice looking coin @lordmarcovan
I nominate you to start that thread! I totally agree it would be a much needed and very useful thread.
You’re right about that, Jeff. Hits don’t get circulated grades. I don’t care how many of them there are. Only wear gets circulated grades, because we’re not in this trying to divine whether it circulated, we’re in this trying to determine whether there’s evidence of circulation wear. If there is, it gets graded on the circulated standards. If there isn’t, it gets graded on the uncirculated or MS standards. And there’s all there is to it...
I voted "62" before I saw the answer. The is super smooth with virtually no bag marks, but it has a rub, especially on the eagle's wing. It's really an AU-58, but coins like this end up "market graded" in MS-62 holders.
BINGO. My point exactly. The difference between normal strike, contact marks, and actual wear is an important distinction.
I can't seem to grade the 21 Peace. I think the problem is that I have one that the TPG's have twice called MS61. Not to knock this coin, but mine shows less friction and considerably less marks than this one. Frustrating.
