Hey folks. I own a hardware store, and while not a coin roll hunter, I occasionally see things come in the I buy out of the cash drawer for myself (I collect ancients). Today I opened a roll and found a roll of silver Roosevelt dimes. Then I opened another and found a mixed roll of Roosevelt and mercury dimes. Apparently some of the old stuff is hitting the streets.

A good day for you but maybe a sad day for grandpa's collection that got rifled. It would be interesting to see what a surveillance camera could tell.

It doesn't look like Grandpa's collection so much as his sock drawer. And it might have been Grandpa himself who spent it.

We get extra rolls from the bank and keep $100 or so in rolls in the safe. I checked all the rolls in there, only found the second with the mercs. I am a corporator at the local bank, so wonder if I can take a look. One of the rolls was from a bank which has been closed for decades, so there is likely validity in your grandpa statement. Likely an old gent passed and someone cashed in his already rolled spare change without checking. I can imagine it's not at all uncommon.

I agree. I think that's probably the way it happens, most of the time. It is a much more common and plausible scenario than drug-addled teenagers stealing from Gramps, or some such, though that does happen too.

i had a hoard kist like this last year. similar size from a lady, at least 80, at the coinstar. With one 1897 barber dime

My boss found it and knowing me as the resident coin collector, let me have them. I gave her 10 bucks, I really don't think she knew that they were silver, so she wanted nothing. I didn't let that happen.

The question now is have you been a good man? If so, this is repayment. If you've been bad... this may be the start to a loooong coin drought. at least that's what some people think.

I think a lot of people are short on funds and when coins are available they cash them in.

Ah, but don't we all feel we have been good?!
I did get a barber nickel once, but it was quite worn. These don't appear to be too worn, but I admittedly don't know much about dimes. It was the color in the drawer that alerted me....the second picture I took while they sat in the drawer....if you look closely you can see some clad buried underneath. I took all 50 out, and on a hunch I went upstairs in the safe and found the second roll ( this one had merc dimes as well)

good point. That might be worth investigating. :( But it is more of a sign that we continue to be losing a generation when silver was still used.

I think the theft is more likely. It doesn't have to be drug induced either. The local pawn dealers tell me their most common thevies looking to unload something are home health aids, and close relatives who are young.
