Sorry, I am having trouble posting my photos today. The 1881S is found in the highest levels of preservation and a high number have DMPL reverse and/or obverse. The San Fran mint did a great job. The pop reports show tens of thousands slabbed I think. It is a common coin in any grade below MS66.

I believe that I have a 66 & I'll try to post a large picture in a moment.

 

I have noticed that the raw and uncirculated S morgans seem to draw a crowd on ebay. I tend to watch them and if I can buy at a deal I will throw my hat in the ring. Lately they have been drawing a premium over the other common dates and I think I just got an answer as to why. Thanks

Let us know what you got. Personally I love little lots of stuff like that. It is like Christmas going through it to see what it is. I bought this on a bit of a flyer and knowing that only one on the coins was a 1928 even though seller listed 2. I thought the old flips with the prices of $1.00 and marked down to $.85 was awesome. I have most of them still in the original flips as I do not need the inventory. I lol every time I see them.

Here is an 81S in an ANACS MS64 holder.

I made a mistake. My 66 was not an 81S, it is an 80S. It is in a PCGS MS66PL holder.

I suspect that the uninformed do not realize how common they are in high grade.

Of course, they can be beautiful in high grade.

1928 Peace ms62(gorgeous luster, a lot on ct loved it)
100 oz of silver bullion(mmm, i love me some silver!)
4 oz silver dollar

Non confirmed but eyeing like a hawk:

1908 No Motto St Gaudens pcgs ms63 so far going for around $621 on ebay
1937 d 3 legger xf45 680 going for on ebay
complete 20 year silver eagle run going for over 5 on ebay(current high bidder) winner gets a free 1909 VDB lincoln. that's what the seller told me he'd throw in.
and ... on reserve, the high relief gold double eagle.

Believe it or not, I'll still have a good chunk of money for saving and possible deals down the road(all currency profit) after this! Man, am I in euphoria or what!

 

I assume that this is a PCGS, ANACS, or NGC certified 3-leg you are considering.

 

Good luck with your purchases BNB. Imo I think the 1885 CC is a good buy right now, prices seem to be pretty low. Just one thing I would suggest, from what I've seen the price difference between 63 and 64 isn't that much (around $60), so I wouldn't just limit myself to a 63. Just my opinion though.

krispy - I'm sure you've heard "experience is a harsh teacher". Sometimes people just have to learn the hard way and go through the "school of hard knocks". There, I just wanted to share those cliches. How much one has to pay for tuition varies with each collector and we all pay some learning this hobby.

Spend away BNB. Have fun and enjoy your new pieces. If you're happy, we should be too. That said, if you ask for opinions, don't be surprised if there are a few folks who will be blunt. Even those opinions can have truth worth hearing for a newbie.

Now, my honest opinion of this coin upon arrival. It's alright looking, has some rust(for the lack of finding a better word) and it's okay. It's not DMPL but again, I really wasn't willing to spend more than what I paid on a 1885cc morgan. So, what do you guys think?

The reverse in my opinion is gorgeous. I still need to purchase my magnifying glass to really analyze and start learning how to grade(just bought the PCGS book)

The obverse is alright, boy, if I could have my hand on it I would definitely clean it up a bit(but, then that would possibly taint the value of the coin so I obviously know better)

 

Nice Coin, just needs a little more tone to be perfect!
