I've heard that some ppl are so leery of getting a fake coin off of ebay that they don't buy from ebay. That's fine and you have the right to buy from whatever source you want. With that said, it is a federal offense to sell counterfeit coins or paper money and my thought is it hardly ever happens on ebay. Sure you read of the occasional fake seller sellling Canadian whatevers but you can usually spot a fake. If it sounds too good to be true, then it usually is and stay away from it. Buying US coins is fairly safe on ebay, at least that is what I think. If you really do think you have a fake then maybe you do. Chances of it coming off of ebay are not that common. My money says that if someone does sell fake stuff they will be arrested and prosecuted if they sell on ebay, it's just a matter of time. just my 2 cents Oh, please correct me if I am wrong as I am on this forum to learn, just like the next guy. thx
The sale of counterfeit coins on Ebay is far more common than you seem to think. There is an alarming number of counterfeits sold on Ebay. And the instances in which sellers get prosecuted for it, are very few and far between on a % basis. That said, the coin which is the subject of this thread appears to be genuine.
I posted the quarter with suspicions of it being fake.(I had no Idea that the date looks like that on the real coins.) A CT member chimed in and told me it was fake and ,obviously I did not wait for a second opinion! I just got caught up in the moment, and one thing led to the next. If not anything else it was a valuable learning experience. I apologize to all you folks, for "wasting your time"... Next time I will be a little more careful about making accusations. Obviously I don't know everything about the hobby I love to do. That is why I am a member of this forum,to gain knowledge!
No issues as buying from e-bay is tough. If you ever have a question again, check out similar coins at Heritage, they usually have large photo's that you can zoom into for detail. If it is still in question then ask here again and I'm sure you will get a range of answers again.
Hopefully this was a good lesson, in a number of ways, for you. Unless you have already done so, you should apologize to the seller.
I disagree with the others. I do not think this was a waste of time. I'd rather see a ton of these threads than none. :thumb: Ribbit
Interesting, I just read an article in one of the coin mags that the number is staggering and as much as 40% at any given time are fake/copies. No I haven't a clue about the percentage nor if I were looking at a fake unless it was so blatant even a novice could see it. I will say this the other day I did see a $50 Gold 1oz. buffalo that was listed as a COPY that look so darned real it made me get mine out of the safe and think to myself "is this thing a copy?". Others even I could tell it was a fake from a mile away.
Unfortunately, there are many fakes on ebay. Normally they are reserved for tougher coin types or key dates, but it always pays to be wary regarding any purchase. Research and knowlege is key.
Oh no, I know that there are a number of counterfeits being sold all the time on ebay but the majority of the coins that are counterfeited are trade dollars, silver dollars and the ancient types. Luckily for me, I heard of the fake trade dollars that are sold on ebay from this forum so I've changed my mind about buying one off of ebay. I do think that US coins aren't counterfeited that much and if I am wrong about that then I have alot to learn. Personally I've been on this forum only about a month and I've seen 3 fakes. Two were silver dollars and one was an ancient something or other. No worries, the opportunity for me to learn more is right in front of me. :hail:
I patched everything up with the seller and Just wanted to thank everyone for helping me correctly identify this coin. She(the seller) is not angry, just a little confused.
i bought some fake foreign crown. but it cost me only $0.25 to $0.33 each.. now they are selling $0.50. e-bay go for $10.00 or more. be careful.....
If it is low end uncirculated it seems like a dang GOOD price! Coin Values (OK maybe not the best guide but I don't think it is that far off.) lists a low end Unc at $30 for MS-60. It doesn't get down to the $6 range until you reach G-4 Even in XF-40 it's $12.
I hope you payed with pay pal ,they are quick to give you back your money. That is the funniest looking date I have seen. A straight 9 and a long bottom on the 2 and the date is in the wrong place . Kind of forward a bit. But that is just my opinion. Coin itself looks good but the date looks altered .
