Howdy peeps, Charles Sherwood Stratton (aka: General Tom Thumb) was born on January 4, 1838, and for reasons unknown he stopped growing early in his childhood. At the age of five, he stood only 25 inches tall and weighed 15 pounds. http://history1800s.about.com/od/americanoriginals/a/gentomthumb.htm There are some nice die cracks on the obverse, some interesting recutting of the legends on the reverse, and it's lightly scratched up on both sides but in decent condition (XF) and there are 2 varieties, the US version (this one) and an English version, which I still need. :goofer: I first saw this for sell from a Ebay seller in Switzerland but the starting bid was more than I was willing to spend but I finally found one I felt was affordable. Post yours, if you have one. :thumb: Ribbit
They were advertising tokens for P.T. Barnum's Circus. Mr. Thumb was one of the star attractions. Ribbit
One of my ancestors who was a fire fighter supposedly saved Tom Thumb and his wife by carrying them both out of a burning building.
