Stella even after hearing that it came back BB I'd give it a 64 , I've seen worse 64s without the luster yours seems to have and worse hits , so unless the pics are way off , I'd say you did good . rzage
That sounds like a good possibility and another reason why it's so difficult to grade MS coins from photos.
HERE i cracked it open, im going to send it to NCG next... lol I also found some things i point out on the OBV.... Let me know guys -STELLA
Wow, your original picks were hiding all sorts of things. I agree that the coin has altered surfaces. Look at the discoloration of the portrait and how it differs from the natural color on the neck and lower obverse fields. In addition there are significant marks on the coin that were not really evident in the first photos. I am downgrading my original grade from MS64 to MS62, but it doesn't matter because NGC will details grade it as well as a problem coin. In fact, it bears resemblance to my whizzed Barber Half.
Ummm, wow... I wouldn't have guessed that. EDIT: Upon seeing second set of photos, my original thought process was way off, I think that PCGS might have gotten that one right. And I think it would be wrong for you to crack it out, and put it in an auction, without stating it was in a GENUINE PCGS holder for altered surfaces.
I can'r believe those are the same coin. Look at the throat, on the old pictures, there are 2 roundish hit. On the new one they are gone & replaced by that one large hit, higher up. Old: Two small hits on the chin, new: nothing. as a result: yes, altered surfaces, or something.
I'd be really curious how NGC grades it. The new photos are pretty revealing but if everyone here did not know it got a details grade I am not sure they would be saying the details are so obvious. It's just darn tough to accurately asses an MS coin from photos.
What a difference a new pictue makes , I don't think it was whizzed , as my reason I think whizzing would of evened out all the marks mentioned , also for a 100 year old coin I think it was definately cleaned and not just a mild dip . rzage
CrustyCoins , you got me there , it's not a bad looking coin as the pictures are , the obverse looks ok except for a couple of hits , th e reverse just doesn't look right , maybe cleaned , and even though I know it came back with a details grade I'm hard pressed to tell what is wrong with it , I would love to see it in hand , it can't look to bad or I don't think stella would of bought it as a MS-64 . rzage:hatch::hammer:
