It wasnt until i joined this forum that i learned about people searching rolls for coins. - i had never thought of doing that. So i wanted to know a few things. -do you just go into the bank, and buy some rolls then sell them back? -how do you know which rolls to get? and lastly my grandpa still has a 5$ quarter roll from Las Vegas, its about 20 or so years old (the date on the coin I can see is 1979 - not to mention, he even said it was about 20+ years old). Do you think i would find anything old in that roll? thanks ~Mag
Well, you won't find anything new in it. There were some pretty good quarters in circulation twenty years ago. It would make a great start on a quarter set if you have any interest in them.
Yeah-go into the bank and ask for whatever you want. SOmetimes they have them and sometimes they don't. They might only have a few. Look through the rolls and look for silver and key dates-all the usual. OR-whatever interests you. Then go back to the bank and return them. OR-you could just buy somestuff with your extras, Oh, and....neat quarters back then-like cladking said BIll
I would recommend that you return any unwanted coins to a different bank than the one you got them from. This keeps the tellers from getting too annoyed with you for returning a bunch of unwanted coins to them.
ah, very true Cave. I was thinking about opening the 5$ roll, then i thought maybe i wont. Then again - its gonna get opened sometime, and the quarters arent going to change! Also, do you guys buy the rolls (empty) so when you are done you can put them back in (along with some spares you might have)? thx edit: CladKing, well yeah :-D I ment anything like... 1945 or older.
Magman, I just put the coins right back in the rolls I got them in. Although, if you are looking at the nickels, dimes, pennies, they are quite difficult and tedious (sp) to do this, I found that one of my banks branches has a no fee coin machine. works fine. good luck JD
you could be correct Wheatpenny. I guess its just a personal thing. I did it the first box I searched and it almost turned me off searching pennies. I think it is easier (at least for me) to look at them, then put them in a bank bag. The bank I take my rolls of halves is the same one with the coin machine so it makes it real conveinent(sp). JD
ohh ok, thats the other thing i thought of too, but wasnt sure, because some rolls may be the ones that are folded at the end(?) thanks for your help guys. I might go out and get a roll of nickels - just to see what i get.
