I suppose there is a fine line between pitting/corrosion truly hurting the appeal of a coin vs not mattering much. came across this AR denarius with some pitting, seemingly ancient. I’d call it minor, but curious to hear your thoughts. Zoomed in to show what I am talking about: Is this sort of pitting ancient, or aggressive in nature? I know from experience with copper coins that this type of pitting can really degrade a coin over the years; faster than one would expect... Do you typically avoid coins with this type of environmental damage? Interested in hearing your thoughts and opinions!
I prefer worn coins with good surfaces to higher grade coins with pitting. Not everyone feels that way. My example of that coin, unfortunately, has wear that revealed its copper core. That makes a little pitting seem minor by comparison.
Thanks for sharing! Did your coin progressively get worse over the years, or has it stayed in the same state over the course of the years you’ve owned it?
