I'm spending the week at my moms and we started going through all the junk in the attic, got lucky and found this 1883 $5 Half Eagle. My Red and Blue books aren't with me so was looking for an idea of the value. For being found in a box of junk it is in amazing condition. I found an uncirculated one on ebay with a current bid of $335. I guessing the mint is P since I can't find a mintmark on it. Given the condition of this one what would the Red/Blue book value on it be? Thanks.

Nice find! It looks genuine and EF-40 or so in grade; maybe 45. Given the title of the thread, I was half expecting to find a racketeer nickel..lol, but this is the real deal.

This is pretty much the only thing we've found that isn't actually junk. We'll we also found a butter churn that might be worth a couple hundred. But other than that and the coin, just worthless junk so far except for a few things of sentimental value. We're not even half way done shifting through it so hopfully I'll find some more gems.

I would agree with Johnny and say the EF40 is a fit grade for the coin.
The coin, if in that grade, assuming it is original, based on the scans, is worth around $370 on numismedia's wholesale pricing.
I would suggest going through ebay, and trying to find one similar in the completed listings, or going through heritage's completed listings, and finding one in EF40 and see what the going price is, so you can see where the market for these coins are.

Great find , going by the condition , I'd say around $300 . That's some junk find , I hope it was at least wrapped up in something .

It looks like an XF45 to me and should be worth about $300.

the 1965 redbook has it listed at 32.50 uncirculated, 25 VF, so anywhere from 250 to 300 sounds about right.

Don't know if the 1965 redbook is really all that relevant in this situation. LOL :D

I would love to help you clean out your attic. I have a feeling, you just might find the Holy Grail up there. Happy for ya. Traci
P.S. be very careful of what you toss out, some junk might very well be some valuable antiques.
