My brother got a uncirculated quarter from the year he was born. it's been a month since he got it. He been rubbing it because he thinks he can make it really old. when he was rubbing it for the first week he had taking off a black film on his hands. the forth week he started to get a green film. is he getting anywhere with it? or is it just a waste of time.:smile :smile:smile
What is his intention with the coin just to make it look old, because he thinks it will be more valuable if it is old and looks it? If for value he is essentially killing it by "rubbing" an uncirculated anything. So his intent is the esential question.
Is he looking for that aged look for some particular reason? I would say if the coin has been coming into contact with leather, that will leave a green film on it that will transfer to his hands if the coin is silver or clad. Otherwise, I'm not sure, I doubt he has rubbed his way into the clad portion of the coin.
I would say he is actually decreasing the value of the coin, and I'm glad he isn't ruining an uncirculated key date. (assuming it is not a 1932 D or 1932 S BU quarter)
He is definitely decreasing the value of the coin. And to answer the OP's question, yes in my opinion he is absolutely wasting his time.
I don't really understand the point of this thread, isn't it common sense? Not trying to be mean, just I really don't get it.
What does the question mark mean? If you'd like me to further explain my answer I'd be happy to do it.
Is it that hard to understand? If it is not clear, let me clarify it. Your brother is ruining the value of the coin. In ANY sort of collecting condition is the number 1 factor of determining value. Another thing I want to add is that just because a coin is old, or has an old look doesn't mean it is worth more. Supply, Demand, and Condition are the determining factors of a coin's value
That may be true if it is clad, but what if he was born in the 30s/40s? A BU is worth more than a circ in that instance.
I agree. However, he did say it was uncirculated. And rubbing it to make it "look old" will probably eliminate any possibility that it ever could be worth more than 25 cents. Now, its likely that it was only worth 25 cents to begin with, so it doesn't really matter. But he asked if it was a waste of time, and I believe it is. If he wants to make his new quarter look old though, thats cool. It is his quarter
