An attractive little Gem minor which remains the condition-census top-pop example (population 1, none higher) as of this post. The 1889-H had a relatively low mintage of only 36,000 pieces, though since Guernsey was and is a small place, mintages did tend to be fairly low across the board.

Note the old-fashioned "GUERNESEY" spelling with three E's instead of two.

Beautiful coin, LordM. I find it most attractive ... and interesting. I collect these and yours is a better condition than any that I have.

I do like the Channel Islands predecimal coinage. I have a full set, as far as I want to take it. :)

Sharp strike on that one. Maybe a smidge better than the strike on mine.

I find that coin very interesting. I've never seen anything quite like it. Good one, LordM!

Tough to get clear faces on the lions for sure. :)

There are three minor varieties, you have the close 9, mine is the far 9. There is also a slightly low 9. I don't go that far on purpose, but will retain different varieties if I happen by them

I just love the Channel Islands, they used French currency into the 20th century, spoke a French dialect until WWII - are the only original Norman possession still under the British monarchy and used their own local coinage.

The one double coin was 1/8th of a British penny the equivalent of a half farthing - a coin that only saw very limited use in Britain in the early 19th century.

Their paper money is a whole other sphere of interest:

The reverse references the hero of the Battle of Queenstown Heights near Toronto Canada in 1812 - Sir Isaac Brock was a native of Guernsey that lost his life while his forces defeated the American invaders.

For a small low population place off the coast of France they have had an outsized influence on history.

@Siberian Man - I like the threepence with the Guernsey cow! I had not seen that type before. I’ve always liked the big 8-doubles pieces.

IMG_1870.jpg IMG_1869.jpg The one thing I hate about seeing posts like these is my acquisitional wanderlusts takeover. I have literally thousands of British, Irish, Aussie, NZ and South African pennies I'm sifting through the past weeks an' wishing I had some Jersey and Guernsey 1/12 shilling an' 8 Doubles to mix it up more.

Are you checking those UK pennies for varieties? :)

I didn't know Sir Isaac Brock was from Guernsey.
Here's an 1816 Canadian halfpenny token commemorating Brock.

And mintmarks. I've separated everything, and am now busy on the Aussie pennies for a fellow forumite. The British coins are everything from William III halfpennies on up to QEII pennies. I sifted out the silver and cupronickel coins a couple of years ago. Literally there are about 90 lbs of coins.

That’s a veritable Smaug’s hoard of bronze! Good, dirty fun. Many’s the time I have ended up with greenish, funky-smelling fingertips after pawing through lots like that (only not as large).
