It was minted between 700 BC and 2004 AD. I'm sorry but I don't know the piece.

    Where did you "find" it.

    Very best regards,

Its meant to be an 8 escudos cob from the Lima mint. The date appears to be (16)86, if the symbol in the lower center is an 8. But this would be the wrong style for that date, too early. I really don't think it is authentic.

Whoops, I take that back on the date, the date is (17)36, so the style is correct. Can you weigh the piece? It should be about 27 grams.

If you don't own a scale (which I'm assuming you don't) try a local coin shop or a jeweler some gun shops have a scale for measuring powder.

You can buy a electronic coin/jewelry scale for around $10 nowadays. What is the diameter & depth of the coin ? Traci

I mention the weight determination because it is an easy test for anyone to perform. It would only be the first pass on authenticity. There are a lot of fake cobs around. A person more familiar with this particular series than myself might know right away from the photo if it is real. One thing I can say about it now is that it is supposed to be gold, so the color is not quite what I would expect on a real one.

Please don't try to clean it!

Yes, I was going to comment on the copper color earlier but left it to the guys that really know this coin. I will make one very important comment PLEASE DON'T TRY TO CLEAN IT! Improper cleaning could easily ruin it making it worth a small fraction of what it could otherwise be worth.

If these CT people authenticate it, then they can also make recommendations on how to conserve it.

    Very best regards,

Okay, it really just looks dirty in person, and i've been scared to try to clean it for fear of messing it up, so thank you for that advice..and i still havent found a scale i can use..But i did take some more pics
