I really wish my scanner did justice to the toning..you guys would see the future NGC starness in this one.

There is a thing that bothers me though (actually a few).

    1. See that dot by the right star at 3 O'clock on the obverse? Could be just a dot, or maybe oxidation..would NGC bodybag it for that though.

    2. I am positive this is real toning..and I grade it an MS-62...say if it comes back NGC MS-62 star, is it worth it?

    3. Do I really even need to send this in to NGC? I am using it for resell, but I figure that it may sell better as a star, rather than raw...even though the toning is obviously beautiful.

Here's the pics (I brightened it a bit, so you guys couls see the black dot on the obverse):

    I don't think it's worth sending it.
Maybe if it graded 65 or higher...

Also, it's too bad we can't see the toning, because from the looks of it from your scanner, it's nothing stellar, lol.
Do you have another way of getting pics? I think we'd all like to see it :D

edit: also, if its to sell [online], you'll definitely want better pics

Ok, if the coin is graded as you would like it to be or lets say even if it grades MS63FS the value of the coin will be in the $15.00 range.

How much are you going to spend for the coin to be graded?

How much can you sell the coin for now?

Yes, the coin looks like it has a nice rainbow tone too, it but if you can get $5 - 10 for the coin the way it is, what would you feel better with?

Not sure I can make an accurate comment as the scanner seems to have distorted the color a bit and made it look environmentally damged on my monitor.

I'd say hold off on that.

I was reading a thread yesterday about how NGC grades these nickels.
There standards are a little weird. It is possible it could grade better than you think. I am not an expert by any means.Just a little something I ran across while researching.

We really need a photo to answer your question. If the coin is not at least MS64, it is not worth getting graded regardless of how nice the toning is. Having said that, I don't see anything from your scan that would indicate an MS62. It looks much better than that, but it is really small, out of focus, and scans don't effectively show luster.

If the coin is MS64+, I would say that having it graded by NGC is a good idea if you want to sell it. A Jefferson with that type of toning will sell for about $50 even in a low grade like MS64. This is especially true of late 50's issues which are very rare with rainbow toning.

BTW, that spot will have no effect on the grade. Honestly, I would be more concerned that the streakiness of the reverse toning would disqualify it from the star designation than that spot getting the coin body bagged, which they don't even do anymore.

If you could get me a large clear photo of the coin that shows both color and luster, I would be able to give you much more definitive advice.

PS: My 1959 slot in my NGC registry set is blank.;)

I like this nickel. But before you start believing it would get a star designation, check out this auction. I bid this quarter up to where it went and I lost.
Whoever submitted this one, I'm sure thought it would have a great chance at getting a star. I think it deserved it. But they didn't give it one. Many coins out there that you would think would get a star, don't get one.
