    Hi all,
Anyone got advice on how much a 1892-1916 Barber set ( 24 Halfs, 25 Quarters, 25 Dimes) all G4-F12 in a Whitman Folder.

And a set of 1916-1945 Mercury Dimes (27 Coins) 1946-1994 Roosevelt Dimes (49 Coins) all F-EF in a Whitman album is worth?
No further info on them at the moment, Im assuming they are all no mint mark.

I have a chance to buy them and dont really know whats a fair price to offer for them.
The photos are his and they dont show much detail, I havent seen them yet but would like to have a rough idea of a reasonable price when I go to look at them.
Any help from the experts would be very welcome.....
    Thanks all...

    Hi Mulligan,

It's hard to tell from the images, but those coins are pretty shiney for conditions of Fine and under... Have you looked at them under a loupe? If they have been polished or cleaned, I would drop whatever offer you were considering significantly. If cleaning is not the case, the offer would depend quite a bit on what years are there...

more common dates would bring a lot less than key or semi-key examples.

WOW---how I wish I could get complete sets of Barber coins...hopefuly next year I'll start on my Barber Half collection....

From the photos I would say that they are cleaned...it also looks like a date set and not a date and mintmark set.

    Hi guys,
    Thanks for the replies.
I havent seen them yet but I agree they look a bit shiny for F and under, Im also thinking that they're all date sets (nice nonetheless!) Ive bought a few coins from him before and they were fine, Im hoping they've not been cleaned too much (If they are).

As for a reasonable offer, Lets say they are date sets and have been cleaned and all years are present........Any ideas what to offer him??

    Alright...lets say no key dates...

    Half dollars...$1.50-$2.00 each.
    Dimes...$0.25-$0.40 each
    Quarters...$0.75-$1.00 each

BTW---the dimes don't look cleaned or at least not as bad as the Half and Quarter collections...Is the seller an older collector...because sometimes the older collectors ungrade...

    mulligan,

this is my opinion, but if those halves are cleaned, I would just pass. The only way this person would sell them to you is if you offer enough that he doesn't think he can sell them for more. And if he can't sell them for more, neither can you... and that means you're stuck with someone elses problems, so down the line you will just want to get rid of them.

unless cleaning doesn't bother you - then pay around what speedy said... maybe a little higher - those #s are rough speedy!! :D

Hey Rick...I make it a habit to bid and make low offers...then if the person counter offers great...if you will listen to dealers talking sometimes you will hear that when a dealer is buying a coin he always ask.." how much do you want for it"...then when the person tells...if its lower than he was going to say...great...if not he either hands it back or he counter offers.

I agree with you...I would pass for my collection...I have a box of Problem coins that I keep for trading and selling and such...once I had a hand full of silver halves and I sold them to my dealer as low and turned around and got a key date!!--1908-S IHC
